Eric McClure reveals health issues

Former NASCAR driver Eric McClure details a multitude of health issues as he sits in Bristol hospital

In 2003, Eric McClure made his NASCAR debut. Over the next 14 years, he ran 288 races.

His career best NASCAR Xfinity Series finish came in 2013. He finished 8th in the opening race at Daytona International Speedway.

In 2016, McClure made his final career start. This weekend, NASCAr heads to Bristol Motor Speedway. McClure is also in Bristol but it’s the Bristol hospital to be specific.

“I appreciate all the prayers from the request on Monday. We we’re planning to keep all of this confidential based on the chosen hospital I am in (Bristol) & certain things about it. Despite our attempts to control the information, my mother started getting texts regarding my diagnosis,” MCClure stated via social media.

“Before I even made it known I was here. I have almost 500 messages, and I’ve tried to answer some, I’m not physically able to answer all of them. Because of the interest/messages, I feel I should make it known.”

Eric McClure health issues

Rumors were flying regarding the health of the former NASCAR driver. McClure cleared those up…

“I do not have staff infection. The other rumors of diagnosis Were egregious & attacked my character; and each message seemed to point the the same people of origin. But it’s ok. It was always the norm.”

“I still have the lung infection. It isn’t fully healing, But after ruling it out as a cause of the other, treatment has resumed.”

“I also have Rhabdomyolysis. My muscles were dying and even heart muscle was at risk. It gave us a scare, so it was treated before & after being brought here.”

“As a result is the Rhabdo, I had compartment syndrome in both arms and legs, and I had to have emergency surgery twice to open the muscles in each limb. Both were deemed successful, but the first one may have happened too late for full recovery. It’s a waiting game now.”

“All of this led me to full kidney failure in both kidneys. I am on dialysis for the foreseeable future. It makes me sick/nauseous.”

Eric McClure Recovery

“I’ll be in here awhile I’m told. They’re either sending me to UVA to find a cause (unlikely now), or just a rehab facility when this is over.”

“I’m told dialysis could be weeks or months but they are fairly confident they will heal. . And it will take a while before I can learn to walk again, Use my arms, etc.”

“This is been a nightmare. I don’t understand it, and I’m not sure why God allowed it. But he must have something great planned from it for my good and his glory.”

“I’m thankful, because they did save my life. They were able to save all four of my limbs so far, even though I’m going to have to learn how to use them again.”

“Anyway thanks for listening. There were so many things going around and so many visitors getting turned away downstairs – because I’m in here with no name- that we assumed we should just share.”

“I’m not out of the woods yet, but slowly seeing improvement in one area. And I’ll say I have learned to never again take little everyday things for Granted. I’m thankful for those of you that have prayed and those that have visited and encouraged me. And helped feed, dress me and make me laugh during time.”

“Ok, that’s long enough. I know it isn’t as eloquent as I can usually speak-so it’s a ramble-and my time with access to my phone is limited, I just wanted to give everyone an update.”

Between 2004-2014, McClure ran three Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series event. However, he attempted to qualify with the underfunded race team at many more superspeedway events.

McClure attempted to qualify for four Daytona 500 events but missed the show. His career best finish came in his very first start back in 2004 where he finished 26th at Talladega Superspeedway.
