Altercation at Winder Barrow Speedway results in jail time (Video)

Dirt late model driver runs backwards on track; Fight breaks out; Arrest made

The dirt track is a 1/4-mile bullring oval in Winder, Georgia. The green flag was out on the limited late model race.

Watch the dirt late model fight video below.

Gus Simpson and Chris Woods banged fenders at Winder Barrow Speedway in turn one. Chris Woods ran him wide into the corner.

The race resumed. The two drivers went about their race. But, two cautions later, emotions got the better of them.

The driver of the #11, Gus Simpson drove backwards on the race track. He lined the #17 of Christopher Woods in his scope.

Simpson drove right into the front nose of Woods. The front noses are shaped more like a ramp in today’s world of dirt late model aerodynamics.

And a ramp it turned into. Simpson drove right over the nose, across the hoods and remained on the gas until he landed on the roof of Woods.

It wasn’t over…

Sometimes, that’s it. But, in the world of short track racing, it’s rarely stops with on-track contact.

After being ran over, Chris Woods climbed from his cockpit. He climbed across the the hood of his own car. Standing with one foot on his own car, he went to kicking Simpson through the drivers side window as he remained suspended in the air and strapped into his seat.

Five or so kicks in, Simpson eventually grabbed his foot. Woods then began punching Simpson through the window.

Five people ran up to the drivers to break up the scene. Track officials and police officers included, they were able to pull Woods down from the window.

Dirt racing driver arrested

Woods was immediately removed from the scene in cuffs. Simpson remained in his race car as he got a tow to the pit area. The crowd cheered as he gave a thumbs up out of the window.

Gus Simpson was later put in handcuffs as well. That’s not uncommon for race track across the country.

However, that’s usually the end up it. Rarely are drivers actually booked in the county jail for crimes on the race track.

In this case, Gus Edward Simpson was booked in the Barrow County Detention Center. The 5′ 10″ 280lbs male was booked by the Barrow County Sheriff’s Office on Sunday morning at 5:16 AM.

His bond was set at $5,000. Simpson remains in custody according to the latest update on the country records website.
