Tyler Dippel details arrest resulting suspension by NASCAR; Charges dropped

NASCAR suspended Tyler Dippel; Now, the charges for possession of a controlled substance have been dropped

Last week, 19-year-old Tyler Dippel was pulled over after leaving a dirt track in New York. This was just ahead of a NASCAR race weekend in Canada for the NASCAR Gander Outdoors Truck Series.

He was ruled in violation of Section 12.1 of the NASCAR rule book. “Actions detrimental to stock car racing” was the note on the suspension.

At the time, the reason for the indefinite suspension was vague beyond that. The announcement from NASCAR didn’t mention an arrest but multiple reports indicated an arrest.

Young’s Motorsports was forced to select a replacement driver. DJ Kennington climbed into the seat.

Eventually, we learned that Dippel’s arrest was due to prescription medication that was in the vehicle when the NASCAR driver was pulled over.

Dippel was also going beyond 80mph at the time he was pulled over. The drugs in the car were similar to Adderall.

Since, Dippel has taken a blood test. The results confirmed that Dippel did not have the drug in his system.

Now, the charges against Tyler Dippel have been dropped by the police.

Tyler Dippel details arrest

“I would like to start by apologizing to my fans, Young’s Motorsports, NASCAR, Gander Outdoors, our partners, and my family and friends for the grief this situation has caused. Due to an ongoing investigation we have not been able to speak on the topic until today,” Dippel stated in facebook post today.

“On August 18, while driving home from the Orange County Fair Speedway, I was pulled-over for changing lanes without proper signal.”

The Orange County Fair Speedway hosted an exhibition race that weekend. In addition to the $100,000 to win dirt modified show. Stewart Friesen and Sheldon Creed brought their NASCAR trucks for a short exhibition race.

“The trooper asked my passenger and myself if we had been using drugs and we responded with “no” – because we hadn’t. The trooper continued to question us and then asked to search the vehicle, which I gave him my consent as I had nothing to hide.”

“In the back of my truck was a friend’s backpack who was not with us containing his prescription medication. Because it was in my vehicle, I was charged with criminal possession of a controlled substance.”

“Upon my appearance ticket, I contacted NASCAR within hours to inform them of the situation. Due to the NASCAR rule book and code of conduct, they ruled to suspend me indefinitely. I respect their decision.”

“Early this morning, at the Town of Wallkill Court, the charges against me in this case were dismissed. We presented proof that the prescription was not mine and the person that the prescription belonged to accepted responsibility for leaving them in my vehicle.”

“I along with my team will work closely with NASCAR to hopefully be reinstated so I can be back in the Young’s Motorsports No. 02 Chevrolet. I take full responsibility for my actions.”

“Thank you again to everyone who has supported me. I look forward to seeing everyone soon.”

Free Tyler Dippel

A free Tyler Dippel campaign has begun within the NASCAR community.

“Ok. Now I’m officially alarmed,” Brad Keselowski tweeted after the news of the charges being dropped.

“This is just… wow I can’t believe someone could be drug through the mud by social and traditional media and lose their livelihood over something so simple, insignificant and trivial,” Keselowski stated.

Update: As of 9pm ET on Wednesday night. NASCAR has re-instated Tyler Dippel, effective immediately.
