Billy Moyer confirms pending retirement while standing in victory lane at Eldora Speedway

61-year-old, Billy Moyer sat in victory lane on the first night of the World 100; Confirms plans step out of the seat

Famed dirt late model star announces retirement following 2019 season just after picking up his 840th career win

Billy Moyer started this racing deal in 1977. Since, he’s picked up a record 840 feature wins.

The now 61-year-old is entered this weekend in the World 100 at the famed Eldora Speedway. Last night was the first feature event of the race weekend.

Moyer qualified 19th in group A. The invert helped him for the heat race and he drove it to the win in heat five.

The heat win put him on the front row for the first of two 25-lap main events on Thursday night. Moyer led flag to flag, drove away from the field and took the win.

In victory lane, Moyer confirmed that 2019 would be his last year behind the wheel. He’s spent the last 42 years behind the wheel of a race car.

Moyer currently operates his own race team out of his Batesville, Arkansas race shop.

It’s worth noting that Moyer had previously retired from the sport. Back in 2015, he announced ahead of the Knoxville Late Model Nationals that he would “still remain a huge part of the sport he loves. but in a different capacity than behind the wheel.”

That didn’t work out. Moyer caught the bug and returned to the seat. As recently as last night, he returned to victory lane for the fifth time in 2019.

Billy Moyer announces pending retirement

“I’d say this is the last one,” Billy Moyer told DirtonDirt from victory lane at Eldora Speedway, speaking of his final World 100 appearance.

“I said earlier this year, ‘This has got to be the end of it.’ “

“Unless a fairy godmother story comes along and I’d be the driver in some way. Without having to do all the work and pay all the bills like I do on this deal.”

“[If that happens], I might continue on. But, it’s tough. I’ve done it a long time. And it’s been good to me.”

“But, there’s gotta be a time where enough’s enough. It’s a lot of work out there at 61 years old. I try to keep myself in shape. But, 100 laps around here is a long time.”

Moyer is a six-time World 100 winner at Eldora, taking victories in ’91, ’93, ’94, ’98, ’00, & ’10. He’s also a two-time winner of the Dirt Late Model Dream at Eldora, with wins in ’98 & ’10.

Two days remain in the dirt late model crown jewel dirt race at Eldora Speedway.
