Alex Bowman and Austin Dillon comment after contact

Austin Dillon addresses how he was encouraged to throw retaliation by his NASCAR team owner; Bowman stands by ‘silver spoon’ comment

Alex Bowman forced a four wide situation at Richmond Raceway. As he dove to the bottom, Austin Dillon came down a little bit to block the move.

The narrow entry made it just about impossible to hold the bottom. Bowman went up the track and into the left rear of Dillon.

Both cars picked up minor damage. Austin Dillon was done with the situation, but his team was not.

Richard Childress (#3 car owner): “Get his ass back if you get to it.”

Danny Stockman (#3 crew chief): “Get him back.”

Dillon caught the rear bumper of Alex Bowman laps later. He turned Bowman around.

Kevin Hamlin (#3 spotter): He’s going to dive it down in there. And there you go.”

As Dillon went by on the inside, he hit him with the right front. He car was now more damaged.

Austin Dillon: “We ruined our car in a wreck for no reason. I didn’t think we needed to do that.”

Alex Bowman: “I wanna shove that silver spoon he’s been fed on his whole life, up his ass.”

This week, NASCAR is at Charlotte Motor Speedway for the ROVAL. Bowman was asked about those comments now that a week has passed.

“What the comment was, you heard it,” Bowman said. “I said what I said. Obviously frustrated with that situation.

“I think it hurt his day more than it hurt mine. We ran where we were kind of going to run anyway. It’s just frustrating. Got ran all they way to the inside wall down the front straightaway and then just turned. It is what it is.”

Alex Bowman is 13th in the NASCAR Playoffs. This weekend is an elimination race. After this race, only 12 of the 16 currently eligible will advance with a continued chance at the championship.

Now, Bowman has a bit of a feud at a crucial point in his season. But, he’s not bothered.

“Not immediately worried about it,” Bowman said. “Typically don’t see him at these places anyway.”

“Well, if he’s that good, he’ll catch me at some point,” Austin Dillon told the media.

Initially after the retaliation, Dillon was frustrated. Mainly in that he was encouraged by the team to do it.

“That’s just part of it,” Dillon said of his team pushing for the retaliation.

“Part of how they operate. (Childress is) obviously a very involved team owner and is on the radio a lot more than our owner (Rick Hendrick). That’s just part of it. It doesn’t matter.”

“He’s not holding the steering wheel. I’m not worried about who gave directions to anybody or anything like that. I’m here to advance to the next round this week and handle it in the future.”

“I feel like I handled the business during the race and that’s all it was. Passed that. We raced each other the whole rest of the race. There was no bumping, no nothing.

“I think we’re pretty much square.”

Alex Bowman qualified outside pole for the ROVAL at Charlotte Motor Speedway. However, he backed it into the tire barrier in the last 30 seconds of final practice.

Austin Dillon will start in 30th.
