Charlotte ROVAL Results: September 29, 2019 (NASCAR Cup Series)

NASCAR race results from the ROVAL at Charlotte Motor Speedway

Today, NASCAR unloads at the familiar Charlotte Motor Speedway. But, it’s the ROVAL, a 2.28-mile road course the uses most of the traditional oval track in addition to an infield road course.

This is a cutoff race in the NASCAR Playoffs. 16 drivers come into this race with a chance to advance. Only 12 will advance out of this race weekend in Charlotte, North Carolina.

It’s an all Hendrick Motorsports front row. William Byron and Jimmie Johnson head to the flag stand.

ROVAL
Stage 1 – Report

Laps: 25 (1-25)

Green flag, William Byron gets the jump on the inside. Byron leads into turn one as Johnson holds 2nd.

Alex Bowman is sideways heading into the backstretch chicane. Bowman locked up the wheels and slid into the back bumper of Austin Dillon into the corner. Bowman heads right to the pit area. Martin Truex Jr blew through the chicane to avoid it and he has to stop in the restart zone.

Lap 6, Bubba Wallace is serving a pass through penalty. He missed the chicane on lap one and didn’t stop in the restart zone.

Lap 15, William Byron leads Jimmie Johnson by 5 seconds.

Lap 20, Ryan Preece wheel hops into the back stretch chicane. As he spins, the caution is out.

Pit stops

Harvick, Johnson and others hit the pits. Larson and Byron stay out. Harvick will restart 11th.

Green, Larson and Byron are even at the flag stand. Larson takes a wider entry and comes off the corner with momentum and the lead.

Kurt Busch gets into the back of Chris Buescher. Buescher gets into the back of Johnson and Johnson tags the bumper of Bowman. Several cars are around in turn one and the caution is back out.

Kyle Larson takes the win in stage one as this one finishes under caution.

ROVAL
Stage 2 – Report

Laps: 25 (26-50)

The rest of the field heads to the pit lane. Larson is first in and Byron is first off. Logano and Keselowski lead them to the restart.

Green flag on stage two, Logano is clear well before turn one.

Lap 30, Kevin Harvick has climbed on the bumper of Logano who’s out on old tires. Chase Elliott had caught them both. Elliott dives to the inside of Harvick off turn eight. Elliott moves to 2nd as they hit the banking on the oval.

Lap 31, Elliott is all over the bumper of the lead with four new tires. Elliott works to the inside of Logano through the infield portion. Logano leaves the lane open and Elliott moves to the lead.

Lap 33, Brad Keselowski is falling through the field after he locked up the tires into the front stretch chicane. He pits under green for new tires.

Lap 37, Joey Logano heads to the pit lane under green. This is a planned pit stop. Logano is out but he hits the tire barrier as he exits pit lane on cold tires. The crew calls him back to the pit lane to repair damage.

Bubba Wallace and Alex Bowman are racing hard all over the course. Bubba Wallace has stuck his middle finger out of the window, multiple times.

“If he doesn’t put that finger away, he’s going to get one,” Bowman radio.

Lap 42, Bubba Wallace is in the wall. Alex Bowman turned Bubba Wallace as they exited the chicane. Wallace tagged the outside wall.

Pit stops

The leaders head for the pit lane. Chase Elliott is first in and first off. Elliott will restart in 8th.

Green, Clint Bowyer leads into turn one.

Chase Elliott is flying through the cars that stayed out as he had four new tires. He’s up to 4th.

5 to go in stage two, Bowyer runs wide through the infield. Brad Keselowski drives by and takes the lead.

4 to go, Elliott is on the bumper of Bowyer for 2nd. Elliott has a run on Bowyer off turn 8 as they head for the oval. Elliott to 2nd.

2 to go, Chase Elliott is on the bumper of Keselowski for the stage win. He looks to the inside in turn five. Keselowski fights back on the outside but he gets loose into the next corner. Chase Elliott takes the lead.

ROVAL
Stage 3 – Report

Laps: 59 (51-109)

Chase Elliott stays out along with most of the field. Clint Boyer and Chris Buescher head to the pit lane.

Green flag on stage three, Chase Elliott is clear by two car lengths into turn one. They run four wide in the middle of the field.

Lap 62, Daniel Hemric is around in turn 8 and the caution is out.

Ryan Blaney heads to the pit lane. He has an issue with the rear end.

Green flag, Elliott is clear by two car lengths into turn one. He stomps the brakes and locks up the front wheels. Elliott drives straight into the tire barriers! The caution is back out.

“I cannot believe I did that,” Elliott radio.

Green flag, Harvick gets the jump on Keselowski. Martin Truex Jr follows him through and takes 2nd.

Kyle Busch has a flat left front. He’s coasting around the track, a full lap around on that flat. Larson was taken three wide by Newman. Larson was unaware and he got into Busch as a result.

Pit stops

36 to go, Harvick leads Truex by 1.7 seconds. Brad Keselowski heads to the pit lane under green.

34 to go, Logano and Bowman pit. Fuel only for Logano.

33 to go, Harvick and Truex pit together.

29 to go, Chase Elliott is in for his final stop. Harvick cycles back to the race lead. Truex trails by 4 seconds.

25 to go, Chase Elliott is flying through the field after smacking the tire barriers while leading earlier in this race. He’s up to the top 10 with newer tires than most of the leaders.

22 to go, Harvick leads Truex by 8 seconds. Chase Elliott is up to 5th.

21 to go

21 to go, Ricky Stenhouse Jr is around in the backstretch chicane and the caution is out.

Most of the leaders stay out. Hemric, Keselowski, Bowman, Logano, Kurt Busch, Newman and 10 others head for the pits. Newman stalls as he exits the pit lane.

Green, Harvick is clear at the flag stand. Truex cuts in behind him. Bowyer takes Byron three wide and moves to 3rd.

17 to go, Hamlin is looking inside of Austin Dillon through the infield section. Hamlin gets sideways and goes around. Ryan Newman is collected as the track is blocked.

Green, Harvick noses ahead on the bottom. Truex holds 2nd.

14 to go

14 to go, Suarez is off in the infield grass. He stalls and the caution is out.

Almirola is under the cut line in the NASCAR Playoffs. He heads to the pits for new tires.

Green, Harvick and Truex rub fenders into turn one. Harvick comes out with the lead. Elliott moves to 3rd.

11 to go

11 to go, Chris Buescher is around as Kurt Busch gets into him off turn 8. The caution is out once again.

With 7 to go, they’re coming to the green. NASCAR drops the red as Garrett Smithley has lost some fluid from the rear end. NASCAR is dropping speedy dry on the track before the restart.

It’s an 8 minute red flag. Rain is in the distance in turns three and four.

6 to go

Green flag with 6 laps to go, Harvick and Truex run even into turn one. They remain even off turn one.

Harvick moves to the lead on the inside in turn two. Chase Elliott works inside of him as well. Elliott to 2nd.

Chase Elliott gets into the bumper of Harvick off turn 8 for the race lead. He’s on his bumper again off the back stretch chicane. Elliott drives around the outside of Harvick in NASCAR turns 3-4.

Elliott is on the inside as they head into the final chicane. He’s clear. Elliott returns to the race lead!

5 to go, Bowman has moved to 2nd. He’s one point out of the Playoffs. Almirola and Newman bang doors as Newman remains one point above the cutoff line.

3 to go, Ryan Newman misses the back stretch chicane. He’ll have to serve a penalty but Newman doesn’t stop in the restart zone. Now, he’ll have to serve a pass through penalty! Newman is out of the Playoffs. Bowman is back in!

Chase Elliott takes the white flag. Suarez is all torn up behind him, no caution.
