Big crash at Talladega Superspeedway in NASCAR race; Gaughan barrel rolls at 200mph (Video)

Brendan Gaughan: “Mother, it’s OK. It’s just a flip. It didn’t hurt. I promise!”

On Monday afternoon, NASCAR unloaded for the second half of Sunday’s rain delayed race at Talladega Superspeedway. It was a thrilling race with three wide action from start to finish.

With 6 laps to go, Brendan Gaughan was the recipient of a push from Brad Keselowski. On the outside in lane three, Gaughan was looking for the race lead.

In the middle, Kyle Busch was getting a push from his brother, Kurt Busch. However, the Chevrolet noses come to a point at the front. That point makes pushing difficult.

Kyle Busch was turned sideways off the front bumper of his brother, at the front of the field.

At the exact second that Gaughan moved to the lead, Kyle Busch was turned sideways and coming up the track. He clipped Gaughan in the left rear and turned him sideways.

With his door to the field into turn three, Gaughan was hit in the left front by Matt DiBenedetto and the right rear by Kurt Busch, at the same time. The impact from both of those cars gave lift to Gaughan.

The car went up in the air and did a barrel roll. It came back down, landing on all four wheels.

The big crash at Talladega Superspeedway ended the day for many of the front runners. In total, 11 cars were involved.

Gaughan expects to be back for the 2020 Daytona 500.

“You might have to call Michael Gaughan or Paula Gaughan right now to ask that question because I think right now neither of them are very happy at the moment,” Gaughan said after exiting the infield care center.

“In 22 years of NASCAR racing — I’ve flipped a ton in the desert — I’ve never flipped a stock car until now. So my mother and father might be a little upset. I’m 44, but I still have a mommy and a daddy. I think they’re probably a little hot right now but I’ll cool them down.”

DiBenedetto was one of the drivers that hit him just before the flip, “I was like, ‘Oh crap! He’s going upside down.’ My nose got into him and then I just saw him flip over me.”

The flip was near perfect. It went over in a hurry and came right back down on all four wheels.

Gaughan joked, “No, they said the Russian judge, politics, he docked me a couple of points. He said I didn’t put them all down at the same time. Politics are nasty right now, so screw them.”

“I was having a great time.” We were up front. I show up, what, four times a year and people think I’m crazy for loving this racing, but I love racing at Daytona and Talladega, enjoy the crap out of this.”

“When I come with the Beard family and the Chevrolet that they give me with that ECR engine that Richard (Childress) gives me and a little bit of help, we come to be here for the win. We had a chance to win. That’s all I can ask for.”

Gaughan wasn’t so upset with going upside down, even joking about it.

“Just happy that he got out of his race car,” Ryan Newman told NBC Sports of Brendan Gaughan’s crash. “It’s still disappointing to me to see that after 50 years we’re still flying race cars.”
