Qualifying will take place tomorrow. A unique twist is that it will take place under the lights. That’s likely to through a wrench at the teams as both practice sessions today are in sunlight.
Texas
Final Practice – Report
Duration: 50 minutes
Many drivers sit at the edge of the pit lane ahead of the green in the session. Denny Hamlin and Kyle Busch lead them to the track as the lights are on.
31 minutes remain, Clint Bowyer and Kyle Larson are on track. Both are full thottle through turns 3-4. They each lift slightly into turns one and two. They are running with a gap to cars ahead on different ends of the track.
There’s two strategies for this weekend. Teams can trim the cars and go fast in a straight line or they can pack on downforce and roll quick through the corners. One will set the pole. But, the balance of both will win the race.
29 minutes remain, the red flag is out on the session. The No. 66 has come to a stop at the end of the pit lane and is unable to re-fire.
Halfway
Clint Bowyer leads at the halfway point.
Halfway in final NASCAR practice at Texas Motor Speedway: 1. Clint Bowyer (28.684); 2. Aric Almirola (28.726); 3. Denny Hamlin (28.794); 4. Kevin Harvick (28.804); 5. Erik Jones (28.818); 6. Kyle Busch (28.851); 7. Brad Keselowski (28.856); 8. Martin Truex Jr (28.875); 9. Kyle Larson (29.891); 10. Kurt Busch (28.895);
As the caution flag lifts, 20+ cars hit the track at once.
16 minutes remain, Denny Hamlin jumps to the top of the board.
10 minutes remain, Drivers have remained on the inside lane in the corner. Nobody has moved up to lane two or three to test out the PJ1 that’s been applied to the track.
Aric Almirola jumps to the top. Stewart-Haas Racing holds three of the top four positions. Their whole fleet is quick.
5 minutes remain, Kyle Larson is changing up his line. He’s exploring the PJ1 in turns three and four. He’s closing in on a car ahead and trying that lane out to get some clean air. He tries it for the first time back in turn one, he gets loose there.
2 minutes remain, many cars are now using the PJ1 on entry and exit in turns three and four. They’ll hang their right sides through the middle at the entry and exit instead of cutting quick to the bottom on entry. That’s a change from what we’ve seen all day.
Aric Almirola wins final NASCAR practice!
