The track has applied PJ1 once again. It’s laid down on the outer grooves of the racing surface.

Texas
Practice – Report

Duration: 50 minutes

The track is green. Half of the field rolls out all at once.

The field is glued to the bottom lane early. That’s the fastest way around plus it takes some heat to activate the PJ1 in the higher grooves.

Drivers are lifting to about half throttle into turn one. They are nearly wide open into turn three.

“It starts ricocheting off turn four,” Denny Hamlin says of his car after his first run. He’s referring to the front splitter.

Hamlin is back out. He jumps from 12th to 3rd on the board.

Halfway

Clint Bowyer is quickest at the halway point in this session. Stewart-Haas Racing holds three of the top four.

Halfway in Texas Motor Speedway Practice: 1. Clint Bowyer (28.620); 2. Aric Almirola (28.801); 3. Denny Hamlin (28.862); 4. Kevin Harvick (28.899); 5. Kyle Busch (28.967); 6. Kurt Busch (28.988); 7. Kyle Larson (29.019); 8. Chris Buescher (29.022); 9. William Byron (29.034); 10. Jimmie Johnson (29.036);

We’re not seeing a lot of group runs in this session. A few teams are sending their cars out in pairs of two, but no pack practice runs just yet.

5 minutes remain, Denny Hamlin continues to climb the times sheet. He started the first run, well off. The team has just tuned on the machine and brought him to 2nd on the board.

2 minutes remain, Kyle Larson is running all over Harvick to test the dirty air balance. He’s rolling good and holding the bottom to avoid a loss of downforce. But, Harvick gets loose ahead of him, lifts and Larson loses the nose as well as he closes closer to the car ahead.

Clint Bowyer holds on to win Texas practice!
