This is a unique NASCAR qualifying session. Both practice sessions were held in the daytime. The race will also take place in the afternoon. Meanwhile, this session takes place at sunset.

The air is cooler than an session so far, as is the track surface itself. The track going to have a lot of grip. Some teams will be able to run full throttle for the whole lap.

Three teams had inspection issues ahead of this qualifying session. As a result, three NASCAR crew members have been ejected from Texas Motor Speedway

Group A in NASCAR qualifying consists of the bottom 20 qualifiers from the previous week. Their order in this session is set at random.

Ryan Newman has a tire rub on his lap. This is an impound race so if the team attempts to fix that head of the race, they’ll start at the rear. Teams are allowed to change ride heights, which may fix the issue.

Jimmie Johnson is trimming the exit of the corners. Instead, of swinging out to the wall, he pinches the exit to make the track shorter. That means his car has a lot of downforce.

Kurt Busch is the 12th car to qualify. He pinches off the exit of the corners as well. Busch rolls to the middle of the track and no further as he exits the corner with plenty of room between his car and the outside wall. Shortening the track works for him as he jumps to the top of the board by 2 tenths of a second.

Harvick does the same on his lap. He tops the teammate so far. Stewart-Haas Racing has been the car to be in all sessions so far this weekend.

Parker Kligerman is inside the top 10 so far in his underfunded operations. John Hunter Nemechek is in his first career Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series qualifying session, he also sits in the top 10.

Kevin Harvick is quickest so far as group A qualifying comes to a close!

Texas Qualifying Results – Group A: 1. Kevin Harvick (28.465); 2. Kurt Busch (28.657); 3. Ty Dillon (28.901); 4. Austin Dillon (28.915); 5. Bubba Wallace (28.931); 6. Jimmie Johnson (28.936); 7. Ryan Newman (28.951); 8. Ryan Preece (29.018); 9. John Hunter Nemechek (29.097); 10. Parker Kligerman (29.123);

Group B

Everyone has been full throttle so far. They run the high line on their get up to speed lap and drop to the bottom lane on their times lap.

Joey Logano enters turn three higher than most. He’s sticking his right sides into the PJ1 through the middle lane. He cuts to the bottom later than most, just using the PJ1 on entry. But, he loses time there and sits 7th so far.

Eight cars remain, Kevin Harvick still sits at the top. But, his teammate Clint Bowyer is up next. Bowyer dominated the track yesterday.

Bowyer wiggles through turns one and two as he cuts to the bottom. He chases the car all the way to the wall off turn two. That cost him a ton of time. Bowyer is 20th on his run.

Kevin Harvick takes the pole position at Texas Motor Speedway for the AAA Texas 500!
