Dirt racer David Gravel to get his shot in NASCAR

David Gravel and Jeff Gordon comment on the NASCAR opportunity for the World of Outlaws driver

David Gravel heads into the 2020 racing season as the defending winner of the Knoxville Nationals. He runs the demanding 96 race schedule with the World of Outlaws.

But, aside from dirt racing, David Gravel is heading to NASCAR and ARCA in 2020 via GMS Racing.

Gravel will run six NASCAR Truck Series events with GMS Racing is 2020. Of those, the Eldora Dirt Derby is included, NASCAR’s only dirt race.

Gravel will also run the ARCA Menards Series debut at Daytona International Speedway. For that one, he’ll run for KBR Development who has an affiliation with GMS Racing.

In the truck series, Gravel will have backing from Axalta. They previously partnered with Gravel during his trip to victory lane at Knoxville Raceway in 2019.

In 2018, Gravel explained his NASCAR interest in detail. He stated, “I would regret not trying to get an opportunity in the upper ranks.”

That opportunity is now here.

“Excited for this opportunity to run in NASCAR is an understatement,” Gravel said in a team release.

“I can’t thank Jeff (Gordon) and Mike (Beam, president of GMS Racing) enough for believing in me and putting me in this position to race Eldora and some select asphalt races. It’s going to be a challenge, but I am ready for it,” Gravel added.

Jeff Gordon on David Gravel

Jeff Gordon previously drove with Axalta backing during his NASCAR Cup Series career. He played a roll in helping Gravel land that sponsorship deal for his sprint car ride.

Now, Gordon continues to support Gravel.

“I’ve been following David’s career for a while and have tremendous respect for his talent behind the wheel,” Jeff Gordon said in a team release.

“I had a chance to meet David at the Chili Bowl in 2019 which led to the Axalta Coatings sponsorship opportunity at the Knoxville Nationals in a sprint car.”

“Once I saw his performance at that race I knew he deserved a chance to pursue his dream of racing in NASCAR. It has been fun to see that come to fruition with GMS, who is leading the way in bringing new talent into the Truck Series and NASCAR.”
