Clash at Daytona Results: February 9, 2020 (NASCAR Cup Series)

Clash results from Daytona International Speedway

It’s the first race of the 2020 NASCAR season. The Busch Clash at Daytona, an exhibition event full of 18 drivers are set for the green flag at Daytona International Speedway.

A caution flag will drop on lap 25. Ryan Newman and Brad Keselowski set the front row. The lineup was set by a random draw.

Laps: 75

Green flag, they run even into turn one. Newman noses ahead on the bottom lane off turn two with a push from Martin Truex Jr.

Martin Truex Jr leads on the outside lane. With a push from Keselowski, they are clear of Newman.

Lap 5, the outside lane is the place to be. Newman falls all the way to the back as they line up nose to tail around the outside wall, single file.

Lap 10, Martin Truex Jr has collected trash on the grill. He’s forced to pull out of the lead and get in the draft to remove the trash. Truex can’t find a spot in line until 10th.

The top 10 have broken away. 8 others have purposefully dropped back, led by William Byron. Why? That’s a mystery.

Erik Jones and Ryan Blaney nearly tangle. Jones thought about working to the outside of Blaney. The whole opened and closed in a hurry.

Lap 25, Brad Keselowski leads the entirety of the front group to the pit lane. Meanwhile, the entire second group stays out.

Competition caution

The caution is out.

The other 8 cars hit the pit lane. Seven of them, are Chevrolets. Brad Keselowski cycles back to the race lead.

Pit Road Penalties: Ryan Newman is penalized for two fast entering. Almirola was also penalized.

Green, Keselowski leads. He attempts to block both lanes.

Hamlin has a push from Erik Jones down the back. Keselowski doesn’t attempt to block, Hamlin to the lead.

Clint Bowyer is glued to the bumper of Keselowski off turn four. Keselowski back to the lead on the outside lane.

Lap 35, the field runs single file around the top. Brad Keselowski remains the leader with Clint Bowyer on his bumper.

Lap 46, Kyle Busch has a run on Keselowski for the lead. He noses aheas.

Pit stops

Lap 47, Kyle Busch, Denny Hamlin, Erik Jones and Martin Truex Jr head for the pit lane.

Lap 48, Keselowski and four other Fords hit the pits.

Lap 49, William Byron leads a draft of nine cars that have yet to pit.

Byron gets shuffled out. Chase Elliott takes over the top spot.

Lap 57, Chase Elliott pulls out of line and hands the lead to Alex Bowman.

Lap 60, Alex Bowman pulls out of line and hands the lead to Joey Logano.

Lap 63, the two packs have collected on the track. Brad Keselowski leads the Fords and they’ve caught the Chevrolet group.

Lap 64, Austin Dillon leads a charge on the outside lane. Logano leads the inside.

10 to go

Joey Logano leads and they run three wide for 2nd behind him. Logano blocks all three lines.

Lap 66, Joey Logano and Kyle Busch make contact. Logano was trying to block a run from Busch. Keselowski is also collected.

9 cars come to the pit lane. Kevin Harvick is the first car on new tires, he’ll restart 7th. Denny Hamlin leads them to the green.

Green, Byron and Newman get loose on the outside lane. Both spun the tires.

They both crash and hit the inside lane. Multiple cars are collected in this one. The yellow is back out.

Hamlin and Almirola were the only two cars to escape that without contact. Everyone behind the front row, spun.

Overtime

Green, Almirola and Hamlin are even into turn one. Chase Elliott gives a huge shove to Hamlin off turn two.

Hamlin throws many blocks down the back stretch. He holds the lead into turn three.

Hamlin has a flat tire! He spins across the banking and collects almost the whole field!

Chase Elliott was about the only car to escape all that. Even he tagged the outside wall lightly as he went high to avoid Hamlin.

Six cars coast around the track under caution. NASCAR puts out the red.

Chase Elliott was set to lead them to the restart. He will not as he sits on the track with a flat right rear under the red flag.

Restart

Austin Dillon and Kyle Larson lead them to the green.

Green, Larson and Dillon run even. Chase Elliott pulls to the bumper of Larson and pushes him ahead into turn three.

Elliott has a look to the top, Larson blocks. Elliott dives to the bottom and he makes light contact with Larson as Larson pulls down to block. Both cars are around at the front of the field and several cars are collected.

Restart

Only 6 cars remain on the track of the 18 that started. Austin Dillon and Ryan Newman lead them to the restart.

Green, Dillon leads on the bottom into turn one. Newman has a push from Erik Jones off turn two.

Dillon pulls up to block and Newman crosses over and cuts to the bottom. Newman leads as Dillon pinches him down to the inside line.

That’s left the outside lane wide open. Kyle Larson is on the bumper of Jones. Three wide for the lead into turn three. Larson pushes Jones to the lead on the outside.

Larson dives to the bottom and takes the lead. Jones fights back on the outside and they run three wide for the lead coming to the white. Newman leads on the bottom.

The white flag is out. Newman leads by several car lengths at the line.

Hamlin is on the bumper of Erik Jones as they run at the very back of the small field. Hamlin is a lap down. But, they are locked and coming to the front.

Everyone else runs single file on the bottom. Jones is up to 4th off turn two, with momentum.

Heading into turn three, Austin Dillon pulls off the bumper of Newman and looks to his inside. Jones is there. Hamlin pushes Jones by all of them as they run three wide again into turn three.

Erik Jones takes the win in the Clash at Daytona!
