WoOLMS win stripped from Dennis Erb Jr at Volusia Speedway Park (Video)

Fireworks as the World of Outlaws Late Model Series unloads at Volusia Speedway Park

The DIRTcar Nationals is in full swing at Volusia Speedway Park. Wednesday night hosted the first night of the World of Outlaws Late Model Series.

Mark Whitener was on his way to a race win. It would have been his first career WoOLMS win. However, Brandon Overton was on a charge to take it away.

Whitener and Overton started to bang doors. This allowed the field to close.

9 laps to go, Overton looked to the outside of Whitener heading into the corner. Whitener shut the door. Overton drove it to the bottom and slid him for the spot anyway.

They rubbed doors off the corner. Whitener held the spot.

In the next corner, Overton attempted another slider. This time, Whitener hung onto his right rear. As they ran off the corner, they were even.

But, they were also out of room. The two drivers rubbed doors off the corner. This time, Overton took the lead.

Coming to 7 to go, Whitener drove it deep into turn three. He slid Overton for the spot but he didn’t try to clear him. Whitener drove into the door of Whitener and pushed him over the cushion.

Whitener and Overton were out along with the caution flag. Dennis Erb Jr was handed the lead.

With 5 to go, Dennis Erb Jr opened the gap on Brandon Sheppard. However, Sheppard beat on the cushion and was closing.

With 1 to go, Sheppard was within a car length. Erb ran the bottom. Sheppard had the momentum off the final corner.

Sheppard attempted to cross under him off turn four. They ran a drag race to the start finish line but Dennis Erb Jr was first to the line.

Dennis Erb Jr penalized

“Erb did not bring his car to postrace inspection as required, forcing officials to penalize him to last place and award Sheppard the victory,” The World of Outlaws Late Model Series report read.

“I don’t know, nobody came and told me. And I’m the driver,” Dennis Erb Jr told DirtonDirt.com after the race.

“I’m the one standing out on the front straight-away, with nobody around me. Waiting to see what to do. And like I said, I just drove over here [to my hauler].”

“I mean, they’ve checked people at the trailers before. They change things, throughout the night, on what they’re going to do.”

“They need to come up with a consistent way of doing things. Just the way it is on some of their rules and stuff. Don’t do it one way, one night. Then, change and do it another, the next night.”

Erb gave a simple example regarding hot laps. Groups staged in the infield for qualifying and hot laps.

“Why are we doing that? Don’t change it up every night.

It’s the second win during the DIRTcar Nationals for Brandon Sheppard.

“Not the way we wanted to win it, Dennis did a really good job there,” Sheppard said. “He kept it out in front of us that whole race. We were right there, definitely slicing-and-dicing there and had a really good race.”

Dennis Erb Jr declined comment after the ruling from series officials.

Mark Whitener vs Brandon Overton

Mark Whitener: “He just wrecked me. He slid all the way into me, put me in the fence and flattened my left-rear tire. He just completely fenced me. I just got wrecked,” Whitener said.

“And the bad part about it is, me and Brandon have raced Crates, we’ve raced spec for $3,000, $5,000, $10,000, whatever the case is. But this is a World of Outlaws $10,000-to-win race.”

“You don’t wreck somebody leading the race. A crate race, a local race, whatever. However he wants to race is good with me, I’ll rub doors all day long.”

“But you don’t take someone’s first World of Outlaws win away from them by putting them in the fence. You don’t do that,” Whitener concluded.

Brandon Overton: “We got together, and I guess he felt like I ran him over, so he came back and ran me over. It is what it is, I just hate it for all these guys that work on this thing, but we’ll get it fixed up and go again,” Overton said.

“It is what it is. We were both trying to win, he was driving hard, I was driving hard and we just came together,” Overton concluded.
