Daytona 500 Results: February 17, 2020 (NASCAR Cup Series)

NASCAR race results from Daytona International Speedway

Today, the NASCAR Cup Series drops the green flag on their 2020 racing season. The 2.5-mile oval of Daytona International Speedway is set to host the Daytona 500.

It’s the richest NASCAR race in the history of the sport. The grandstands and the campgrounds are sold out. 100,000 people sit in the grandstands and the U.S. President is set to give the command.

Rain is in the area. Due to sprinkles the start has been delayed as officials put the jet dryers on the track. But, we’re finally ready for the green.

Ricky Stenhouse Jr and Alex Bowman set the front row. 200 laps and 500 miles of stock car racing are up next…

Daytona 500
Stage 1 – Report

Laps: 65

Green flag, Ricky Stenhouse Jr is clear on the outside lane. He drops to the bottom before turn one. That was clearly pre-planned.

Joey Logano leads a train of Fords on the outside lane. Stenhouse Jr throws a block off turn four. Stenhouse then begins blocking both lanes as Logano moves around and looks for a way by.

Lap 3, the form three wide from 9th on back. Kevin Harvick leads the line through the middle.

Lap 6, the field has formed single file around the outside lane. Stenhouse continues to lead.

Lap 20, the yellow flag is back out for more rain. They drop the red as it pours a little harder and we’re now on a slight break.

A day later…

Stenhouse Jr and most of the field head for the pit lane. Four tires for all. A handful stay out.

Green, Keselowski and Newman run even into turn one. Keselowski wins that battle.

Lap 33, the field has formed single file. Keselowski leads the single-file train around the bottom.

Lap 39, Newman now leads a train on the bottom. Keselowski leads on the outside. The bottom lane noses ahead. Newman moves to the top and catches the nose of Keselowski.

Lap 42, two strategies have formed. The front group runs side by side. Another group runs well behind them, single file. The single file lane are saving fuel.

Lap 47, Hendrick Motorsports are coming to the front. All four line up. They charge to the front, Chase Elliott leads.

Lap 59, William Byron is sliding through the grass as the field approaches turn three. He makes moderate contact with the inside wall.

Stenhouse Jr gave him a square push. He then gave a second push on the left rear bumper and it turned Byron around. The caution is out.

Pit stops

Newman leads a group of Fords to the pit lane from 10th on back. All the Joe Gibbs cars return to the pit lane under caution to top off, just ahead of the green. The top 13 cars stay out.

Green, Elliott wins the race into turn one. Johnson and Bowman run side by side for 2nd.

Daytona 500
Stage 2 – Report

Laps: 65

The leaders head for the pit lane. Keselowski is first off with no tires. All of the Joe Gibbs Racing teams stay out, they’ll take over at the front.

Green, all four JGR cars and the Leavine Family Racing machine line up on the inside lane at the front. Denny Hamlin leads.

Lap 75, the field forms single file. Hamlin leads the train around the high side of the track.

Lap 82, Team Penske and the Fords line up and their coming for the Toyota group. Hamlin leads his line to the bottom. The Fords head to the top, led by Brad Keselowski. The outside lane is coming.

The outside lane fades. The Toyotas are controlling this race on the bottom lane.

Lap 90, Quin Houff looked to block a run from Aric Almirola. Houff is turned into the outside wall. BJ McLeod is collected and the cation is out. Kein Harvick also picked up minor right rear damage.

Pit stops

Hamlin leads the field to the pit lane. He’s first in and first off.

Green, Hamlin leads on the top and he drops to the bottom into turn one. The Toyota group has broken up as Stenhouse runs 2nd on the inside lane.

Lap 115, the field runs single file around the bottom. Hamlin leads Stenhouse Jr.

3 to go in stage two, the top 9 run single file. They run two by two from 9th on back. Ryan Blaney leads the train on the outside as they struggle to form a run.

Final lap, Stenhouse is all over the bumper of Hamlin trying to move him off the bottom. Stenhouse moves to the top, Hamlin blocks and Kyle Busch works inside of Stenhouse.

Stage 3 – Report

Laps: 70

The field heads for the pit lane. Hamlin is first to the pit entry. Timmy Hill is first off with no tires. Hamlin is off 2nd and everyone behind him took four tires.

Martin Truex Jr pulled out of his pit stall and he knocks a gas can with his front nose as it sits in the middle of the pit lane.

Penalty: Chase Elliott will go to the tail as he pulled out of his pit stall with the gas can still attached.

Green, Blaney and Hamlin run even into turn one. Logano locks onto the bumper of Blaney and shoves him to the lead off turn two.

Lap 139, Ricky Stenhouse Jr shuffles Logano out of line. Logano falls to 8th.

Lap 141, Kyle Busch to the lead. They run three wide for 2nd on back! Hamlin locks onto the bumper of Busch and they nose ahead.

47 to go, Blaney locks onto the bumper of Brad Keselowski. Via they outside lane, they push their way to the front.

Penalty: Ricky Stenhouse Jr made a move to the inside of Blaney. As Blaney went to block, Stenhouse went below the yellow line to complete the pass. Stenhouse will make a pass through penalty.

35 to go, Logano leads. He blocks the inside and outside lane, whichever has the run.

Pit cycle

30 to go, Logano dives for the pit lane. It’s the Ford group and the Toyota group have joined them. Two tires for most of this group.

Jimmie Johnson leads. The top 10 are Chevrolet as they have yet to pit. They’re currently drafting up to the group that just came off the pit lane.

28 to go, Ricky Stenhouse Jr is around off turn four. Heavy damage but no caution. Stenhouse was on the brakes and heading for the pits when Erik Jones tagged his bumper.

27 to go, Several Chevys hit the pits including Chase Elliott. Only half the group pitted, that spin got them out of sync.

26 to go, the rest of the Chevy group heads for the pit lane.

25 to go

25 to go, Kyle Busch cycles to the lead with Joey Logano on his bumper.

20 to go, Ryan Newman is on the bumper of Keselowski. With a huge run, they take over the top spot. Kyle Busch falls outside the top 10.

17 to go, Kyle Busch is heading to the pit lane with a tire rub.

Big crash at Daytona

Big crash at the front of the pack!

Joey Logano locked onto the rear bumper of Aric Almirola. As they approached Keselowski, it just turned the No. 2 in front of the field. Almirola and Keselowski spin. Many cars are collected, more cars than not.

The red flag is out. All drivers are ok.

Clint Bowyer, Kevin Harvick and others head for the pit lane.

Meanwhile, Kyle Busch missed the crash as he was coasting to pit road at the time. But, he has some sort of mechanical failure. He needed a push truck to re-fire and now smoke trails the car under yellow.

Green, Newman and Christopher Bell run even at the line. Newman noses ahead on the outside line.

8 to go, Reed Sorenson has lost a tire. He chases it up the banking and collects Timmy Hill. The caution is back out.

4 laps to go

4 laps shootout to the finish. Green, Logano leads on the outside. Hamlin is all over the bumper of Newman. He pushes him clear by ten car lengths into turn three.

3 to go, Hamlin remains glued to the rear bumper of Newman.

2 to go, Hamlin looks to the outside of Newman. He’s clear. Hamlin leads as the pack is closing quickly!

Chris Buescher looks to the outside of Hamlin. He’s on his own as Harvick leaves his bumper and moves behind Hamlin.

Ryan Preece runs Ross Chastain onto the apron as they run four wide for 4th on back. Chastain bottoms out and he cuts across the track. Multiple cars are collected and the red flag is back out.

NASCAR Overtime

Kyle Larson, Chase Elliott and Bubba Wallace head for the pit lane.

It’s going to be a green-white-checkered finish.

Green, Hamlin leads on the outside.

Clint Bowyer is around behind them. McDowell got into his rear bumper and pushed Bowyer into Justin Haley. As McDowell and Bowyer spin threw the grass, the caution is back out.

NASCAR Overtime #2

Bowyer heads to the pit lane, several times. He still has a car that can finish but it’s beat up a little.

Another GWC finish attempt is up next. Hamlin and Newman set the front row.

Green, Blaney is on the bumper of Hamlin. They noses ahead on the outside off turn two.

Hamlin leads on his own by 5 car lengths into turn one.

They have a run off turn four. Hamlin throws a massive block on Newman! They hold it straight.

Chase Elliott spins behind them.

Final lap, Blaney is on the bumper of Newman. They move to the inside and clear.

Hamlin is on the bumper of Blaney as Newman leads off turn four. Blaney looks to the outside, Newman blocks. Blaney moves to the inside and Newman is around off the bumper of Blaney.

Newman slams into the outside wall and the car flips over. Corey Lajoie comes along with nowhere to go. He slams into the driver side door of Newman and flips him into the air. Chaos behind the race for the win.

Update: NASCAR driver Ryan Newman to be transported to hospital

Hamlin works to the outside of Blaney as they race to the line. Hamlin by inches!

Denny Hamlin wins the 2020 Daytona 500! It’s the second closest finish in Daytona 500 history.
