Ross Chastain to fill in for injured Ryan Newman in NASCAR Cup Series

Chastain will pilot the No. 6 car this weekend

On Monday, Ryan Newman was injured in a fiery crash at Daytona International Speedway. While leading, he was turned into the outside wall.

Newman slid across the track, upside down and was then stuck by Corey LaJoie. After the race, Newman was transported directly to the hospital.

The injuries remain unknown. However, today, Newman was cleared from the hospital and walking.

Newman will not be in the No. 6 car this weekend. Instead, Ross Chastain will fill in for Ryan Newman starting this weekend at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

Steve Newmark on Ryan Newman

“First and foremost, our focus remains with Ryan and his family as he continues to recover,” said Roush Fenway president Steve Newmark.

“We also want to express our sincere gratitude to all of those who have offered support and taken the time to send their thoughts and prayers to Ryan, his family and everyone at Roush Fenway Racing.”

“The NASCAR community has long prided itself on being a close-knit family,” added Newmark.

“That is never more evident than during these types of moments, and we want to express our appreciation to everyone at Chip Ganassi Racing as well as Kaulig Racing for allowing Ross to fill in for Ryan in the No. 6 on such short notice.”

Per the team release, “Currently there is no timetable for Newman’s return. Additional updates will be provided as they become available.”

Ross Chastain to fill in for injured Ryan Newman

“No one could ever take the place of Ryan Newman on the track, and I can’t wait to have him back. As we continue to pray for a full and speedy recovery, I’ll do my best to make him and everyone at Roush Fenway Racing proud,” Ross Chastain stated via social media.

Chastain has run 72 NASCAR Cup Series races, for underfunded operations. He has one top 10 which he claimed in the Daytona 500 for Premium Motorsports.

However, the driver has two NASCAR Xfinity Series wins and three NASCAR Truck Series victories on his resume. Four of those came in 2019.

Last year, Chastain was signed to drive full-time for Chip Ganassi Racing in the NASCAR Xfinity Series. However, DC Solar went bankrupt, amid an FBI fraud investigation. As a result, CGR was forced to shut down their NXS operation due to a lack of funding.

Chastain is going to get his shot. With a team that was just a few hundred feet away from winning the Daytona 500.
