Ryan Newman: Medical updates following Daytona 500 NASCAR crash

Update: NASCAR driver Ryan Newman has exited the hospital

On Monday, NASCAR driver Ryan Newman was involved in a very serious crash. The crash took place on the 2.5-mile oval of Daytona International Speedway.

While leading the Daytona 500, Newman spun into the outside wall after a push from Ryan Blaney. As Newman bounced off the outside wall, he flipped upside down.

As Newman slid on his roof, down the banking, he was struck by Corey LaJoie as about 200mph. Newman was then lifted into the air.

He crossed the finish line, underside up and came to a rest at the exit of the pit lane, still upside down.

Safety crews responded to the scene. Black screens were held up to block the grandstands from viewing. Newman was removed from the car.

He was then placed in an ambulance and transported to the Halifax Medical Center in Daytona Beach, Florida.
