Barstool Sports fires back at NASCAR reporter Jim Utter

Jim Utter picked a battle with Barstool Sports; He was memed to death by a hired ‘Online Nuclear Bomb’ before he found the block button

Dave Portnoy, the president of the company took a trip to Bristol Motor Speedway last year. Since, he fell in love with the sport. Barstool created an entire racing division and have been promoting the sport ever since.

Later in 2019, Barstool Sports sponsored Matt DiBenedetto. The media company pumped money into the underfunded, Leavine Family Racing with primary sponsorship during two events.

Barstool comes with a modern unique approach to media content. That path isn’t typically understood by the traditional NASCAR media members who have been trained to do things a certain way.

Those traditional media members are tapped inside their own tiny box. Despite holding the key to their release by their teeth, they’re not going to use it.

So, when someone comes along with the freedom to do whatever they want, the traditional ones get nervous.

Hey Jim, the secret is to work both paths, turning it off and on, like a switch. But, it’s whatever works for you.

Here’s what happened….

Media question: “One of our high powered partners does data. We had the over under for cautions listed at 6.5. Our data partner thought it would be a lot less. We also have information that if NASCAR were to do this, they’d increase their bottom line by 10%, including their ratings in the fall when they’re up against the all-important NFL. What’s you opinion if NASCAR went to four stages?”

That was a mouthful but it wasn’t a horrible question. Yet, soon after, Motorsport.com’s Jim Utter picked up his tiny computer and found the twitter app:

Jim Utter: “Some whackjob asked some ridiculous question to Joey Logano. Probably a Barstool thing.”

The question above did not come from Barstool Sports. Utter mistakenly thought that but is was a jab at the company as a whole. That gave Barstool a green light to respond.

Utter has a short fuse and doesn’t like negativity on his feed. So, he’s quick to block accounts. But, nobody is safe from the block button, just ask @iRacing.

As expected, Barstool Sports takes the opposite approach. They have a hired online nuclear bomb specifically for handling this type of thing.

Vindog was hired by the company a month ago. He’s written a few things for the media company. However, a bulk of his work is done in meme form, attacking those that attack Barstool.

Soon after, a flood of Jim Utter memes hit the internet for our amusement:

Dave Portnoy, president of Barstool Sports comments on Jim Utter

Dave Portnoy, “No name loser who seems to be universally hated by 99% of all NASCAR fans attacks Barstool Sports for no reason and with false info.”

@Vindog56 meme’s him to death. Another no name cries about it and says me responding was unwarranted. BOO HOO. Keep your mouth shut then.”

“He won’t be able to block me in person.”

“We can only say mean things about you but you can’t respond” crowd. Not my bag. Never was. I didn’t hire The Lord of Memes” to turn the other cheek.”

Portnoy was approached for comment about his ‘Online nuclear bomb.” To which he responded:

“The Vindog is a 56 year old viral sensation who I hired to meme people to death who attack us. He is the best in the business. Has general, targeted and live action memes.”

“He is most likely going to meme you to death when you publish this article. He just has memes you don’t have. It will be over before you even know what happened. Death by memes.”

Barstool Sports recently released a podcast with Clint Bowyer. It climbed the Apple charts at a rapid rate. During the latest episode, Clint Bowyer commented on the situation.

Clint Bowyer: “At the end of the day, they both help sell our sport. Love them and appreciate everything they do. But… If there was ever a guy that had a problem with someone, it’s Utter. I knew it as soon as it came up.”
