This race marks the first race for the new NASCAR short track rules package. The rear spoiler has decreased from 8 inches to 2.75 inches.

Downforce has also been taken away on the front via the splitter. Additionally, Goodyear has brought a new softer tire with more stagger.

There’s a lot of new things as teams are set to roll to the track for NASCAR qualifying in Phoenix, Arizona.

There were no inspection issues ahead of qualifying. However, Martin Truex Jr changes an engine and John Hunter Nemechek changed a radiator. Both of those cars will drop to the rear at the start of Sunday’s NASCAR race.

Phoenix
Qualifying – Report

Laps: 2

Group A consists of the teams outside the top 20 in points. Their order has been set by random draw.

PJ1 was applied to the top half of the race track this weekend. We saw teams using it in the final round of practice. However, with 10 cars qualified, none have touched the PJ1 and all remain glued on the bottom.

Austin Dillon locked up the left front wheel heading to the green flag into turn three. He stopped the car, turned around, went backwards and restarted his lap in turn two.

Denny Hamlin is quickest in group A qualifying!

Phoenix Qualifying Times – Group A: 1. Denny Hamlin (26.117); 2. Erik Jones (26.257); 3. Martin Truex Jr (26.278); 4. Christopher Bell (26.295); 5. William Byron (26.364); 6. Group B

Kevin Harvick is the first car to chop the apron of the dogleg. He also clipped the PJ1 at the center of the corner. Harvick jumps to the top of the board!

Kyle Larson runs a similar lines to Harvick’s in the PJ1. However, he didn’t cut near as much of the dogleg as Harvick did. Larson to 3rd.

Chase Elliott hardly clips the apron in dogleg. He enters in the middle in turn one, drafts it out to the PJ1 and back on the gas. Elliott runs the yellow line into turn three and he jumps to the top of the board.

Chase Elliott will start from the pole position in the FanShield 500 at Phoenix Raceway!
