NASCAR, INDYCAR, F1, World of Outlaws, MLB, NBA, NCAA, MLS and many more sporting events have either been canceled or postponed.
On Friday morning, NASCAR as expected to continue their event at Atlanta Motor Speedway in Georgia. Days prior, the sanction had banned fans from entering the track. However, a few hours ahead of the opening practice round, they elected to cancel the event.
According to health officials, large gatherings prevent a risk for the rapid spread of the Coronavirus which began in China back in December and has since hit the globe.
However, one event is set to continue tonight.
The ULTIMATE Super Late Model Series was set to kick-off their 2020 season at North Georgia Speedway last weekend. However, due to weather it was postponed until March 13th.
Tonight, that event is set to continue as planned.
North Georgia Speedway is still racing
North Georgia Speedway is located in Chatsworth, Georgia. The 1/3-mile clay oval welcomes Sportsman, Supers, Crate Late Models, Pony/FWD and Beginner classes to the track tonight.
“ATTN race fans and drivers. We are racing tonight as scheduled. We are looking forward to seeing everyone tonight. Load up the family and come on out,” the track said in a facebook statement.
Georgia governor looks to ban large gatherings
The event could still be canceled by a last minute update from Georgia Governor Brian Kemp.
In the state of Georgia, there are 12 confirmed cases and 19 possible cases of the Coronavirus (COVID-19).
An Atlanta City Councilman stated via twitter on Thursday that Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms is currently working with Georgia Governor Brian Kemp on a ban of large gatherings in the state.
“We need to move quickly in Atlanta to prohibit large public gatherings for at least 30 days,” Councilman Amir Farokhi tweeted on Thursday morning.
The tweet was followed shortly after, “Update: Just learned that the Mayor is working with the Governor on this very issue.”
Also in Atlanta, non-essential employees were allowed to leave work early on Thursday. Those workers were required to take work phones and computers with them. Likely hinting those employees would be working from home.
Many states have enacted a large gatherings ban. As of now, Georgia does not have that ban in place and thus the dirt track will open the gates tonight.
