Four LOLMDS races postponed
In response to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series officials have announced the postponement of events for 30 days. They join the majority of sporting sanctions across the United States to pause operations.
There are currently 181,755 worldwide cases of COVID-19. 4,155 of those cases are in the United States.
This weekend, the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series was scheduled to head to Atomic Speedway in Ohio. The state has banned gatherings of more than 100 people which forced a pause on the event regardless.
A stop in Indiana was also on deck for this weekend for the national dirt late model tour. As of early this week, Brownstown Speedway was attempting to continue with their event.
Event’s as Tennessee’s 411 Motor Speedway and Alabama’s Talladega Short Track have also been pushed to a later date.
Brownstown and Atomic Speedway had plans to continue
Big events like the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series are crucial to many dirt track operators. Both Atomic Speedway and Brownstown Speedway were trying to continue on with the event per social media statements, despite recommendations from health officials.
Brownstown Speedway
The following statement from Brownstown Speedway was published before tonight’s postponement announcement:
“Brownstown Speedway is continuously monitoring the ongoing COVID-19 health concerns. As of now, it is our plan to race the Indiana Icebreaker and go on with our scheduled season as planned,” the track issued statement read on Monday.
“Races that are sanctioned by groups such as the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series have a bigger play when it comes to making decisions such as this. We are in close communications with them and are monitoring the situation together.”
“We will continue to monitor the guidelines and recommendations that have been set forth by officials at local, county, state and federal levels. Should we need to make changes to our schedule based on the facts given to us by appropriate resources (Indiana government website and CDC site..NOT what the media has posted), we will do so with the best interest of our fans, drivers and staff in mind.”
Atomic Speedway
The following statement from Atomic Speedway was published before tonight’s postponement announcement:
“Hundreds of hours put in during cold wet days for someone who doesn’t know what a dirt track even looks like to tell us we can’t open,” the track stated via social media on Sunday.
“Why can’t people make their own choices? I’m sure a hefty fine would be issued if anyone in Ohio disobeys!PA has been racing for a couple weeks with packed stands!”
The following statement from Atomic Speedway was published after tonight’s postponement announcement:
Today’s statement read, “We will also be rescheduling as many of the postponed shows as we can. Please be patient as we all get through this together!”
“I also want to thank Rick Schwalie and the Lucas staff. We’ve been talking for several days about possibilities and are pleased they decided to rescheduled for our great teams and fans here at Atomic Speedway.”
