Gordy Gundaker: iRacing headaches (VIDEO)

Gordy Gundaker drove from the tail of the B Main into a transfer spot; The feature didn’t go to script

On Monday night, the World of Outlaws Late Model Series made their iRacing debut. Stars from the dirt racing and NASCAR world came together for a night of digital dirt track racing.

The race was hosted on the virtual Dirt Track at Charlotte. The setups were open as drivers tuned their identical machines to their driving styles.

Gordy Gundaker put on a heck of a show throughout the night. But, things didn’t start of well as he found himself 39th of the 43 car field in the opening practice round.

In qualifying, there was some improvement. Gundaker was 33rd of 43.

Heat Race

Gundaker started 8th of 9 cars in heat 3. Only the top 3 cars would advance.

On lap 1, Matt Cosner pinched Logan Seavey (Brandon Sheppard wrap) off the exit of turn two. Those two cars locked together.

Seavey then pushed Cosner into the outside wall down the back stretch. Seavey was turned sideways in front of the field and he barrel rolled across the track.

Along came Gundaker, he was forced to stomp on the brakes to avoid the crash. There’s no yellow flags in the heat or B Main. Gundaker is now way behind the leaders as he had to nearly stop to avoid the crash.

He rebounded, Gundaker drove it to 6th by the final lap. He then threw a slider on Seavey (Sheppard wrap) but he didn’t clear him. Instead, Gundaker pushed Seavey into the outside wall. Seavey stood on the gas and turned him around.

Gundaker finished last (9th) in the heat.

The drivers took to their microphones after the race…

Chris Ferguson: “Gordy, I think you sold about 200 t-shirts in that heat race.”

Mike McKinney: “Mark Richards is not going to be happy.”

Gordy Gundaker: “I’m not really worried about it.”

B Main

Gundaker started 12th in the B Main. The top 3 advanced to the tail of the main event.

On lap 1, Gundaker split the middle of Matt Cosner and Matt Shannon. Three wide off turn two. He took both positions and went three wide for two more spots into turn three.

A bit of netcode forced contact between he and Logan Schuchart. Netcodeis incorrect placement of the cars on the online serve which causes contact when there really wasn’t any. As Schuchart found the wall, he took two more spots.

As cars tangled ahead of him, they slowed. Gundaker was now 3 wide once again off turn four, with two new cars. They all banged fenders at the start finish line. Gundaker was now +5 by the end of lap 1.

He nearly spun back into turn 1 after the contact but he continued. By lap 6, he was trading slider after slider and he moved into the 4th position.

He thrashed through the field and put on a hell of a show. Gundaker finished 4th.

Technically, Michael Hensley finished 2nd. However, something happened. I don’t know if he was penalized or what, but the scoring sheet showed Hensley finishing 9th.

That bumped Gundaker to 3rd. That lucky break from the racing gods moved him into the feature event!

A Main

Ironically, Logan Seavey and Gordy Gundaker were side by side on the last row of the feature event. $1,000 was on the line.

The drivers lined up in a four wide salute, typical of the real world counterpart. 50 laps of dirt late model racing was up next.

Coming to the green flag, both Gundaker and Seavey disappeared from the screen. That means each of them were driving but nobody else could see them. And sometimes, it also means they couldn’t see any of the other drivers on their screens as well.

Those connection issues sometimes come back. And when it did, both Seavey and Gundaker were already over the top of each other.

Gundaker was turned into the flag stand. Seavey went around backwards. Both cars had heavy damage, before they even crossed the finish line for the first lap of the feature race.

Seavey rebounded to finish 5th. Gundaker’s car was more beat up and he ended up going a lap down.

The adversity was there. Gundaker was down early in the night, he scratched back and wheeled the fuck out of it to make the show by 1 position. And after all that, he was wiped out before the start finish line on lap 1.

Racing headaches are very real in the digital world.
