North Carolina governor comments on Charlotte Motor Speedway hosting a NASCAR race

Roy Cooper has seen plans from NASCAR; He hints at an announcement from the series this week after green light from government

Last week, many North Carolina government officials urged NC Governor Roy Cooper to open NASCAR again. North Carolina House speaker Tim Moore was among those to encourage it. To the point of spending a letter to the governor’s office.

Soon after, Cooper stated that NASCAR teams would become essential. Announcing they could return to work with social distancing put into place at the shops.

That cleared a hurdle for NASCAR. Most of the NASCAR teams are based in NC, tt allows them to restart their schedule as teams are set to return to work.

The current stay-at-home order is set to be lifted on April 29th. With a new one, with updated guidelines to follow.

Now, Cooper has all announced that Charlotte Motor Speedway will be clear to go racing. He stopped just short of announcing the plans for the race himself.

On Monday, NASCAR released a tentative schedule to race teams which will potentially see the season restarting at Darlington Raceway in mid-May.

The week after, the tentative NASCAR schedule points the teams to Charlotte, North Carolina. Worth noting, each of these races are close to home base for much of the industry.

“I have had conversations with NASCAR officials and officials at the Charlotte Motor Speedway,” NC Gov. Roy Cooper stated in a Tuesday briefing.

“They have submitted plans that involve social distancing. Our public health officials have looked at them and made some suggestions.”

“But, we’ll approve those. We believe that unless the health conditions go down that we can have the Coca-Cola 600 on Memorial Day weekend in Charlotte.”

“I think that NASCAR will be making that announcement. We believe that’s what will happen,” Cooper concluded.
