Charlotte Penalty Report: May 24, 2020 (NASCAR Cup Series)

Denny Hamlin has been penalized after Charlotte Motor Speedway; Three suspended

On Sunday, NASCAR unloaded at Charlotte Motor Speedway for the Coca-Cola 600. It’s NASCAR’s longest race and following an overtime finish, it became the longest race in the history of the sport.

Ahead of the green flag, Hamlin rolled onto the track and tungsten weight dropped out of the back of his machine. As the cars rolled on the formation lap, the weight was then struck by Aric Almirola’s car.

Ahead of the green, Hamlin was forced to hit the pit lane and give up his 13th place starting spot.

The Joe Gibbs Racing crew went to work to replace the weight in the frame rails. Hamlin re-entered the track 8 laps down as the race began without the #11 car.

Two teams have been penalized following the Coca-Cola 600 event. Hamlin will lose three crew members for the next four events.

The series will return to Charlotte Motor Speedway on Wednesday night.

Jimmie Johnson disqualified

Another penalty was previously announced.

The other penalty included Jimmie Johnson who originally finished 2nd in the event. The No. 48 failed post-race inspection.

Johnson was disqualified and relegated to a 40th place finish.

After the infraction, the team suggested something likely broke. A NASCAR official stated that in the past, teams have had things break on purpose, though he didn’t suggest that’s what happened on Sunday with the No. 48.

“I learned on my drive home last night we had been disqualified. It’s a tough reality to process but we are ready for Wednesday and what ever else 2020 throws at us,” Jimmie Johnson stated via twitter.

This was announced around 2am, after the race last night.

Brad Keselowski is officially the race winner. The No. 2 car cleared NASCAR inspection last night.
