NASCAR underglow lights to be used in Bristol All-Star race

NASCAR All-Star Race at Bristol: Underglow lights, Choose cone and new number placements

On Wednesday, the NASCAR Cup Series will unload at Bristol Motor Speedway in Tennessee. The Tennessee short track will host the All-Star race for the first time, a debut for the event at any track other than Charlotte Motor Speedway.

But, there’s a lot more changing than just the track itself…

Changes for the 2020 NASCAR All-Star Race: Choose cone, number placement and underglow light kits.

Choose cone

This one is the most exciting.

At a designated point on the track, just ahead of a restart, driver will pick the inside or outside lane. Once they reach the designated point, they will be locked in.

If the first five cars all choose the inside lane, the 6th place car could be the first to choose the outside lane. He’ll start on the outside pole position for the restart.

Previously, we’ve seen cars stopping at the end of the pit lane. If they were going to exit the pits in 2nd, they’ve been known to stomp the brakes right before the pit exit line and let a car go by so they instead restart 3rd, on the inside lane.

Hitting the brakes at the end of the pit lane has been a big issue at tracks like Martinsville Speedway. The choose cone removes the need for that. Drivers will now want to get to the pit exit as quickly as possible. The cone allows them to choose their lane, instead of their order off the pit lane choosing it for them.

This will add a brand new element to restarts. It’s been in discussion for years and will make it’s debut in the NASCAR All-Star race.

New number placement in All-Star race

I think it looks slick.

New for this season, tiny stickers near the front wheels have all but gone away. That has been done in anticipation of this change.

NASCAR team sponsors are currently limited to the hood and rear quarter panels of the car. While, the largest surface area on the race car is reserved for the car numbers. That seems backwards for the companies spending millions to fund your favorite race team, right?

Back in June, NASCAR submitted a graphic draft to teams with a new example design. The number has been pushed way back, allowing for sponsorship placement on the doors of each car.

NASCAR Underglow Lights

As of today, a new piece of information has leaked regarding the NASCAR All Star event at Bristol. The NASCAR underglow light is here.

The news has not been officially released from NASCAR just yet. However, it’s being widely reported and an image of a NASCAR Cup Series car was seen at Charlotte Motor Speedway with underglow lights.

Directly before the All-Star event, The Open race takes to the track. That events includes all cars who are not already qualified into the All-Star event.

Four drivers will transfer out of the Open event and into the All-Star event. In order, they’ll set the last two rows of the All-Star race by: stage 1 winner; stage two winner; Open race winner; fan vote winner.

Whoever is sitting in the transfer spot during the open race will have their Underglow lights turned on to designate the car in a transfer position.

Last year, Chip Ganassi Racing driver Kyle Larson and Kurt Busch did burnouts with underglow lights during Champions’ Week in Nashville. Now, that will be brought to the track.
