Daytona Race Results: August 16, 2020 (NASCAR Cup Series)

NASCAR race results from the Daytona Road Course

Today, the NASCAR Cup Series has returned to the familiar area of Daytona Beach, Florida. However, the track is completely unfamiliar as most of the field will see turn one of the Daytona Road Course for the first time on lap one.

The Daytona Road Course is a 14-turn layout that uses most of the oval in the process. The track stretches 3.61 miles in length.

There was no practice or qualifying sessions ahead of this race. Drivers will see NASCAR’s newest track for the first time on lap 1.

Kevin Harvick will role from the pole position. Denny Hamlin completes the front row.

Daytona Race
Stage 1 – Report

Laps: 15 (1-15 / 65)

Green flag, Hamlin and Harvick run even into turn one and they remain even into turn two. Hamlin takes the lead in turn three.

Lap 2, Kyle Busch is on the bumper of Hamlin for the lead in turn three. These two have broken away.

Busch has a run on Hamlin out of turn two of the NASCAR oval. He outbrakes him into the backstretch chicane and Busch takes over the lead.

Busch cooks the final chicane and locks up all four wheels. Hamlin has a run into turn one. Hamlin retakes the lead.

Lap 4, Kyle Busch flat spotted the tires, twice. Now, he’s on pit road under green. More issues as the crew drops the car off the jack.

Lap 10

Lap 10, Martin Truex Jr has erased a gap of 2 seconds and he’s now on the bumper of Hamlin for the lead.

Truex has a run out of turn one. They run side by side in turn two and they make light contact in turn three. Truex to the lead.

Hamlin has a left front tire rub. He heads to the pits!

4 to go in stage one, Harvick heads to the pits to mix up the strategy. Bubba Wallace does the same. 3 to go, Bell, Kurt Busch, Blaney and more to the pits. All can make it to the end of stage 2.

2 to go, Race leader Martin Truex Jr hits the pits. Chase Elliott is handed the lead.

Daytona Race
Stage 2 – Report

Laps: 15 (15-30 / 65)

The leaders head to the pit lane. Elliott will restart outside the top 15. Joey Logano will lead the field to the restart.

Green flag on stage three, Logano leads into turn one with Hamlin all over his bumper. Kyle Busch is off in the grass in turn two, he loses several positions.

Hamlin looks to his outside in turn three, Hamlin makes that work and returns to the lead.

Lap 19, Hamlin leads Truex by 1.2 seconds. Truex started this stage in 11th.

Lap 22

Lap 22, Truex is on the bumper of Hamlin for the lead. He has a run out of the backstretch chicane. Truex works to the inside of Hamlin as they head into turn 3 of the NASCAR oval. Truex returns to the lead.

Lap 24, Kyle Busch locks up the tires, this time it’s in turn 6. He stalls the car, re-fires, no caution.

4 to go in stage two, Johnson to the pits. 3 to go, Elliott, Harvick, Keselowski, Bell, Almirola, Kenseth, Kyle Busch and more hit the pits. 2 to go, Truex hits the pit lane from the race lead.

Pit penalty: Truex has been caught speeding! He’ll have to restart at the tail end of the longest line.

Denny Hamlin takes the win in stage two at the Daytona Road Course!

Stage 3 – Report

Laps: 35 (31-65 / 65)

The leaders hit the pit lane. Bowyer wins the race off the pit lane with Hamlin off 2nd. Bowyer restarts outside the top 20. Elliott leads them to the restart.

Green flag on stage three, Elliott leads Kurt Busch. Bell gets into the bumper of Harvick in the braking zone of turn three. Harvick is around, no caution.

Lap 35, Kevin Harvick heads to the pit lane as the tires are flat spotted.

JJ Yeley is no longer in the car. He pulled to the pit lane to have the crew blow cold air on him. He went out for 1 lap, circled back and returned to the pits. Yeley climbed from his car and collapsed. Bayley Currey is now driving the No. 27. Apparently, hot air was blowing on Yeley through his helmet, instead of cool air.

Daniel Suarez has also lost a pit crew member and a mechanic to the medical center today.

Red flag

Lap 36, the red flag is out due to lightning.

“I’m not really hungry. But, ice in a cup would be nice,” Chase Elliott radio after the crew asks if he needs anything.

30 minutes later, the cars are uncovered and we’re going racing. Harvick, Truex and others head to the pits ahead of the restart.

Green, Elliott leads into turn one. He gaps Kurt Busch is a hurry.

Lap 41, with some help, John Hunter Nemechek is around, no caution.

Lap 42. Martin Truex Jr has climbed to 20th on new tires. He and Harvick are flying through the field.

Lap 43, Kyle Busch is on the bumper of Brother Kurt for 2nd. He completes that pass, Elliott is 5 seconds up the road.

Lap 44, Harvick clips the grass on corner entry and spins. No caution.

Lap 46, Truex runs 10th. He’s 15 seconds back of race leader Chase Elliott.

18 to go

18 to go, Chase Elliott pits from the lead. Kyle Busch does the same. Issues for Busch, he heads to the garage with broken brakes.

17 to go, Truex Jr leads Grala by 7 seconds.

Truex pits and hands the lead to Kaz Grala who pitted on lap 38.

13 to go, Grala leads Bowman. Chase Elliott is back up to 3rd and coming in a hurry.

12 to go, Grala and Bowman pit. Elliott cycles back to the race lead. Hamlin runs 2nd, 12 seconds back of the leader.

5 to go, Elliott leads Hamlin by 8 seconds.

Kyle Busch is around on the backstretch and the caution is out!

It’s going to be a three lap shootout.

Green, Elliott leads as Bowyer beats on the rear bumper of Hamlin.

2 to go, Hamlin has closed on Elliott, four car lengths at the line.

White flag, Elliott leads Hamlin by five car lengths at the line. Truex moves to 3rd behind them.

Hamlin closed right to his rear bumper in the final chicane. He’s within a foot but can’t touch him.
