Jimmie Johnson reveals Dale Earnhardt, Richard Petty throwback paint scheme

The Dale Earnhardt and Richard Petty paint scheme will run at Darlington Raceway in the Southern 500

Jimmie Johnson is currently in his 20th and final season as a full-time NASCAR Cup Series driver.

Over the years, Johnson has collected 7 NASCAR Cup Series championships. That marks him tied with Dale Earnhardt and Richard Petty.

For Darlington, all three will be combined into one retro paint scheme. The sides of the car mirror the back number 3 while the hood, roof and rear deck mirror the famed blue and order number 43.

The car was revealed via the Dale Jr Download this week.

Johnson tweeted, “I’m proud to honor these two legends and what they’ve meant to me and the sport with this 7x scheme at Darlington.”

Johnson worked with Dale Earnhardt Jr. to get approval for the paint scheme.

“This is next level what you are doing this year,” Earnhardt told Johnson on the Dale Jr download.

He added, “I don’t know why it’s not been done before, but I think it may make people really reconsider how they approach the throwback weekend. I may be overstating it because Dad is involved but it’s not been done quite like this. You are going to honor both Richard Petty and my father with your paint scheme.”

The race at Darlington is set for Sept. 6 at 6 p.m. ET on NBCSN.
