Darlington Inspection Issues: September 6, 2020 (NASCAR Cup Series)

A NASCAR crew member has been ejected ahead of the Southern 500

Tonight, the NASCAR Cup Series takes to Darlington Raceway. It’s the famed Southern 500 in Darlington, South Carolina.

Early this morning, pre-race technical inspection opened. Each team is required to complete the inspection stations before taking the green.

NASCAR officials discovered improperly mounted ballast on the No. 12 of Ryan Blaney. He was scheduled to start from 7th and will instead be starting from the rear.

The lead discovered is weight that teams use in the shops to scale the car. It was accidentally left on the machine as they rolled through tech.

Crew chief Todd Gordon has been ejected from the speedway. The team has also been handed a 10 point penalty.

That points penalty could be huge as it moves Blaney blow the Round of 16 cutoff line.

Darlington tech is not yet complete. This story will be updated if more penalties are announced.

NASCAR Inspection Penalties (Rules)

1 NASCAR Inspection failure: No penalty, the team gets to go to the back of the inspection line and try again.

2 NASCAR inspection failure: If a team fails twice, NASCAR will send that car to the rear of the field.

3 NASCAR inspection failures: They have to start at the rear. In addition, the car has to serve a pass through penalty on pit lane at the start of the race.

Typically, NASCAR crew members are ejected on a second failure. However, due to a lack of practice and/or qualifying in recent events, series officials have given less-strict ejections for failed pre-race inspections.
