Richmond Inspection Issues: September 12, 2020 (NASCAR Cup Series)

NASCAR inspection issues ahead of the race at Richmond Raceway

The NASCAR Cup Series is set to roll in Richmond Virginia. The 3/4-mile of Richmond Raceway hosts the second of three races in the round of 16 in the NASCAR Playoffs.

Teams have been racing without practice or qualifying. They unload and roll right to inspection.

The inspection line opened around noon today, ahead of tonight’s race. Every team passed inspection on the first or second attempt, except Kyle Busch.

Kyle Busch will be starting from the rear tonight. The No. 18 team failed inspection twice.

Busch is one of the 16 drivers in the NASCAR Playoffs. He’s currently 10th in the standings, only the top 12 advance to the next round.

NASCAR Inspection Penalties (Rules)

1 NASCAR Inspection failure: No penalty, the team gets to go to the back of the inspection line and try again.

2 NASCAR inspection failure: If a team fails twice, NASCAR will send that car to the rear of the field.

3 NASCAR inspection failures: They have to start at the rear. In addition, the car has to serve a pass through penalty on pit lane at the start of the race.

Typically, NASCAR crew members are ejected on a second failure. However, due to a lack of practice and/or qualifying in recent events, series officials have given less-strict ejections for failed pre-race inspections.
