Mike Wallace appeals NASCAR suspension; Upheld

Mike Wallace was suspended after a series of social media posts

On Wednesday, the National Motorsports Appeals Panel heard the appeal by Mike Wallace of his NASCAR suspension.

Wallace was suspended on September 10th following a series of social media posts. He was found in violation of sections 12.1, 12.8 and 12.8.1.e. NASCAR suspended him indefinitely.

In addition to the suspension, Wallace is required to attend a sensitivity class before requesting reinstatement.

12.8.1.e: “Public statement and/or communication that criticizes, ridicules, or otherwise disparages another person based upon that person’s race, color, creed, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, marital status, religion, age, or handicapping condition.”

What did Mike Wallace say?

Wallace shared a few race targeted memes on Facebook. One of which showed the stats of killings which listed 2% white on black and 81% blacks killing whites.

Another post showed that people of all color were slaves. The graphic read, “Whites slaves were sold for centuries.” Indicating slavery wasn’t about race.

In addition he posted a comment about Kamala Harris, the VP to Joe Biden.

Mike Wallace shared a photo of Harris with the message, “Can you believe this semi Black person is on TV saying blacks in America have NEVER had the same opportunity as whites? Didn’t we have a black president for 8 years??”

Some posts were later removed or hidden from public viewing.

Appeals panel ruling

After the penalty, Wallace was confused as to why he was suspended as he spoke on the political issues. Bubba Wallace, made similar statements toward people who voted for Trump.

However, the Mike Wallace penalty has been upheld by the panel.

Three person panel: Dixon Johnston, Bill Lester and Kevin Whitaker.

Wallace has the option to appeal the panel ruling to the Final Appeals Officer. That would be the last opportunity to eradicate the penalty.

After multiple years away from the sport, Wallace returned in 2020. He’s made three NASCAR Xfinity Series starts with JD Motorsports.
