NASCAR fines Hendrick Motorsports $100,000

Rick Hendrick has been hit with an L2 penalty; Other Bristol penalties

Rick Hendrick has been fined $100,000 for exceeding the allowed time in the wind tunnel. Additionally, 10 hours have been deducted from their allowed wind tunnel time.

Hendrick Motorsports was found in violation of 5.3.e in the NASCAR rule book.

The team does not intend to appeal the penalty. In fact, the team turned themselves in.

150 hours of Gen-6 (Next Gen) wind tunnel testing is allowed through Dec. 31, 2021. They are allowed a maximum usage of 70 hours in 2020 and a maximum usage of 90 hours in 2021.

The team went over the limit by less than an hour.

The Next Gen car was expected to make it’s series debut in 2021. Due to the pandemic, that launch has been pushed back until Daytona, 2022.

The 10 hour penalty might be more painful than the $100,000. Wind tunnel testing is highly important. Especially when multiple Chevrolet teams lean on Hendrick Motorsports for data.

Hendrick field four cars in the NASCAR Cup Series. They’re driven by Jimmie Johnson, Chase Elliott, William Byron and Alex Bowman.
