NASCAR results from Kansas Speedway; Round of 8 Playoff opener

Tonight, NASCAR unloads in Kansas City, KS. The 1.5-mile of Kansas Speedway hosts the Round of 8 opener in the NASCAR Playoffs.

We started with 16 NASCAR Playoff drivers. After last week, we’re down to just 8. If a playoff driver wins today, they’re guaranteed to race for a championship in Phoenix.

Stage 1 – Report

Laps: 80 (1-80 / 267)

Green flag, Chase Elliott gets the jump on the inside lane. Kurt Busch throws a huge block on Harvick but he’s there. They run three wide for 2nd in turn three, Logano holds the spot on the outside lane.

Lap 6, three wide for 2nd once again. Kevin Harvick takes the spot through the middle.

Lap 10, pack racing is in action at Kansas Speedway, it’s hard for the leader to get away. The colder temperatures are playing a role, adding grip to the race track.

Competition caution

Lap 26, the competition caution is out.

The field hits the pit lane. William Byron takes two tires, the only car to do so and he wins the race to the pit exit.

Green, Byron gets the jump on the inside but Elliott fights back on the outside in turn two. Harvick shoves Elliott into turn three, Elliott leads. Harvick hangs on his outside and clears Elliott off turn two.

Lap 65, Chase Elliott has run down Harvick. Elliott enters high in turn three and he has a run off turn four. Elliott gets to his right rear and takes the lane away, Elliott returns to the lead.

Final lap in stage one, Keselowski is making a charge for the lead as Elliott works heavy lap traffic. But, he’s going to run out of time.

Stage 2 – Report

Laps: 80 (81-160 / 267)

The field heads to the pit lane. Hamlin wins the race to the pit exit.

Green flag on stage two, Hamlin and Elliott run even into turn one. Hamlin clears him on the outside lane into turn three.

Lap 90, Blaney and Elliott run side by side for 2nd, Blaney clears him.

Lap 100, Hamlin leads Blaney by 2 car lengths. Blaney runs the opposite lane of Hamlin in each corner to try and get clean air on the nose. Harvick takes 3rd away behind them. Harvick bobbles and drops back to 5th.

Pit cycle

Lap 123, green flag pit stops are underway. Erik Jones is first to the pit lane. Harvick follows a lap later. 2 lap later, Hamlin pits from the race lead and he brings Elliott with him.

Lap 144, Matt Kenseth is around and the caution is out! Matt DiBenedetto leads as he’s one of three cars that have yet to pit.

The nonpitters hit the pit lane. Harvick and Elliott pits as well. Harvick restarts outside the top 10.

Green, Hamlin leads with a push from Keselowski. Harvick makes it three wide for 7th into turn three. Harvick is clawing through the field with slightly newer tires.

7 to go in stage two, Blaney is on the bumper of Hamlin for the lead but he loses the nose in dirty air. Harvick crosses Blaney and takes 2nd away.

5 to go in stage two, Harvick is on the bumper of Hamlin for the stage win.

Final lap in stage two, Harvick is faking out Hamlin into the corner, tricking him into thinking he’ll go to the inside. Hamlin throws a block on Harvick into turn three.

Denny Hamlin holds him off and wins stage two at Kansas Speedway!

Stage 3 – Report

Laps: 107 (161-267 / 267)

The field hits the pit lane. Logano and Almirola take two tires. Kyle Busch stays out and he’ll lead them to the restart.

Green flag on stage three, Kyle Busch leads into turn one with a push from Almirola but Logano fights back on the inside lane. Logano is clear and he leads off turn two.

Lap 170, Logano throws a huge block on Harvick down the back stretch but Harvick forces his way to the inside. Both of them have a narrow entry into turn three but Harvick takes the lead!

Lap 179, Hamlin has brushed the outside wall! He hits the pit lane under green.

Lap 194, Kurt Busch has an issues as the car is losing power.

Lap 195, Harvick leads Keselowski by 4.5 seconds. He’s driving away.

Lap 197

Lap 197, Kurt Busch is up in smoke! The caution is out.

The field hits the pit lane. Hamlin stays out to take the wave around and get back on the lead lap. Harvick wins the race to the pit exit.

Green, Harvick and Kyle Busch run side by side into turn one. Harvick clears him and Busch is taken three wide into turn three for 2nd.

47 to go, Hemric is slow after contact with the wall and the caution is out.

The field hits the pit lane. Logano wins the race to the pit exit, Harvick 2nd.

Green, Harvick and Logano run side by side into turn one. Logano clears him on the outside off turn two with a push from Blaney. Jimmie Johnson and Ryan Preece tag the wall behind them, no caution.

20 to go

20 to go, Harvick is within a car length of Logano for the race win.

10 to go, Logano has opened the gap slightly. Harvick trails by 0.4 seconds and he’s reeling him back in.

6 to go, Harvick is looking for a way by Logano. Logano throws blocks as Alex Bowman closes on both of them.

2 to go, Harvick nearly brushes the wall off turn two and Logano opens the gap slightly.

Joey Logano holds him off and wins at Kansas Speedway!
