Next year, the NASCAR Cup Series is set to have a new team on the grid. Current NASCAR driver Denny Hamlin and NBA champion Michael Jordan have teamed up to form a new race team. The No. 23 car is set to be driven by Bubba Wallace.

Early in his career, Bubba Wallace drove for Toyota. In 2021, he’ll be circling back to a Toyota machine.

Additionally, Toyota will serve as the primary sponsor for 23XI Racing.

Mike Wheeler has been announced as the crew chief for Bubba Wallace in 2021. Wheeler previously served as the crew chief for Denny Hamlin for six races in 2014 before taking the role full-time between 2016-18.

Currently, Wheeler works with Leavine Family Racing as the team’s competition director. LFR will be closing at the end of the 2020 season.

The car was released this morning on the CBS Morning Show. Watch that full interview below.

“There were some rumors about us starting a team to begin with,” Hamlin said of his co-owner Michael Jordan. “He said, ‘Fake news. But, if you want to make it real news, let me know.’ “

“So, I flew down to Florida to meet with him, within a couple days. In the next 10-14 days, we went through a vetting process to make sure we had everything in line.”

“There’s no doubt in my mind. I believe that Bubba’s outperformed in the equipment that he’s had. There’s been many times where I’ve been passed on restarts and I’m like, ‘I should not be running right here.’ “

Hamlin added of racing Bubba Wallace, “He’s getting the most out of it.”
