Johnson wanted full chrome but he couldn’t due to NASCAR inspection
Jimmie Johnson is a 7-time NASCAR Cup Series champion. On Sunday, he’ll run his final race as a full-time driver in the championship finale at Phoenix Raceway.

Paint, is true to the word. Hendrick Motorsports is sponsored by Axalta, thus all of their cars are actually painted, instead of the modern full body wraps that we see from most teams.
A chrome car spawned the idea. However, chrome is no longer an option in NASCAR. On chrome cars, the images would reflect and confuse the digital scanners used to tech inspect the body shape of the cars. NASCAR pushes the entire field before the scanning station, ahead of each race to make sure all teams are within the rule book.
Johnson’s final race at Phoenix will be his 686th. The driver has 9 wins in his career with 18,937 laps led.

“We decided to have a one of a kind looking race car for my final race. In my mind, a chrome car, it’s rarely done in our sport, maybe once, ever,” Johnson said.
“As it turns out, with the inspection process and the optical scanning that takes place on the car, we can’t do a true chrome. That will trick the machine.”
“But, we have something that’s very similar and it’s going to look great. It’s close enough to the Ally paint scheme, but with the shine base silver and reflective look, the car’s going to pop.”
In 2021, Alex Bowman will take over the No. 48 ride. Meanwhile, Johnson has moved over to Chip Ganassi Racing and will be running Indycars in 2021.
