Chase Elliott penalized ahead of green flag at Phoenix Raceway

Inspection penalties have been issued ahead of the championship race at Phoenix Raceway!

Today, the NASCAR Cup Series is set to battle for a championship. The season concludes on the 1-mile of Phoenix Raceway.

Ahead of the race, all cars must roll through a multi-point NASCAR inspection.

NASCAR Cup Series (Championship 4) : Joey Logano; Chase Elliott; Brad Keselowski; Denny Hamlin.

Chase Elliott was scheduled to start from the pole position.

Both Chase Elliott and Denny Hamlin failed pre-race tech on the first time through. There’s no penalty for a single failure, they just go to the tail of the line and try again.

On the second time through tech, Hamlin passes. However, Chase Elliott failed on the second pass through the line.

Now, Chase Elliott has been penalized. He’ll be going to the tail of the field at the start of the race.

He still has to pass on the third time through. If he doesn’t, Elliott will be forced to serve a pass through penalty at the start of the race.

Logano, Keselowski and Hamlin have all cleared the inspection line without penalty.

This story will be updated in the case of more failures.

Update: Chase Elliott has passed inspection on his third time through the line.

NASCAR Inspection Penalties (Rules)

Here are the NASCAR inspection penalties which were updated in 2020:

1 NASCAR Inspection failure: No penalty, the team gets to go to the back of the inspection line and try again.

2 NASCAR inspection failure: If a team fails twice, NASCAR will send that car to the rear of the field.

3 NASCAR inspection failures: They have to start at the rear. In addition, the car has to serve a pass through penalty on pit lane at the start of the race.

Typically, NASCAR crew members are ejected on a second failure. However, due to a lack of practice and/or qualifying in recent events, series officials have given less-strict ejections for failed pre-race inspections.
