For the first time, the famous no. 21 NASCAR team has full control of a charter
Wood Brothers Racing was founded in 1950 by Glen Wood. That makes it one of the oldest NASCAR teams in operation.
Following the 2006 season, Wood Brothers Racing dropped off the full-time NASCAR Cup Series tour. They instead fielded a part-time car through the 2015 season.
Charters were issued for the first time in 2016. However, in order to receive a charter, a team had to run full time in 2013, 2014 and 2015. The Wood Brothers didn’t qualify for that.
In 2016, the team signed Ryan Blaney and re-entered as a full-time NASCAR Cup Series organization despite the lack of a charter.
In 2017, the team obtained part ownership of a charter. The charter was shared with Archie St. Hilaire of Gos Fas Racing.
Wood Brothers Racing purchases charter
Now, the team has purchased the remaining portion of the charter. For the first time, Wood Brothers Racing is in full control of a charter.

Matt DiBenedetto pilots the No. 21 machine for the team. It’s the final season for DiBenedetto as Austin Cindric will take over the ride in 2022. Cindric currently drives for Team Penske in the NASCAR Xfinity Series.
A charter guarantees a starting position in every NASCAR Cup Series event throughout the season. 36 charters are issued. The rest of the field battles for the remaining four starting positions with the slowest qualifiers of non-charter teams being sent home before the green flag.
Note, the charter only really matters if more than 40 drivers attempt to qualify for a race. With multiple new teams appearing for the 2021 season, a charter is highly important.
