NASCAR driver throws up in car, keeps racing at Daytona

Daniel Suarez drove to his best finish since 2019… with throw up in his helmet

Daniel Suarez has entered the 2021 NASCAR season with a new team. Trackhouse Racing is a startup operation, co-owned by Justin Marks and Pitbull.

On Sunday, the No. 99 team entered their second event. Suarez started 35th as the lineup was set via Daytona 500 results, which he crashed out of early.

However, this week, Suarez found himself at the front of the field. He even led two laps.

With 25 laps left in the race, Suarez began to feel sick. With 15 to go, he threw up inside his helmet but he kept racing. The dedication turned out well for him.

“Those last 15 laps were definitely NOT fun to run,” Suarez tweeted. “You guys can imagine…”

In the last 10 laps, Suarez was 34th. He then drove through the field and finished 16th.

The 16th place run was the best finish for Suarez since 2019 when he was driving for Stewart-Haas Racing. In 2020, Suarez drove for Gaunt Brothers Racing.

Daniel Suarez comments after Daytona

“That was a good run for us today,” Suarez said after the race on the Daytona Road Course.

“I felt like we kept making the car better and better. We were definitely better on long runs. Unfortunately, we didn’t get a lot of long runs until the end.”

Suarez added, “It was fun to lead those laps. We want to do that a lot this year. We will keep working. We’ll be ready for Miami next weekend.”

Suarez is a former winner at Homestead-Miami Speedway. The driver took the win and the championship in the 2016 NASCAR Xfinity Series race at the Florida oval.
