NASCAR reviewing spin by Kyle Busch

“Having a flat tire and trying to get back to pit road is not an excuse to spin out.”

In the NASCAR Truck Series race, Kyle Busch lost a tire off turn four at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. The driver was in the fight for the win, late in the race.

Losing a tire off turn four meant he had to coast on the apron for the full length of the lap. Going to fast would cause the tire to come apart and rip off fenders, making it even more penalizing.

While on the apron in turn two, Kyle Busch spun his truck. NASCAR was forced to throw the caution as the door was pointed toward the field.

In replays, it clearly shows that Busch did not attempt to save his truck from the spin. His hands hardly moved on the steering wheel during the course of the slow spin.

After the race, Busch was asked to walk us through the spin. He replied, “Nope.”

Scott Miller on Kyle Busch spinning on purpose

“Those are tough calls,” NASCAR’s Scott Miller told SiriusXM.

“That obviously came up again this weekend. You know, it’s hard for us to know what is going on inside the car, but we have our competition meeting, and I’m sure there will be discussions on the particular one that prompted that question and we’ll kind of review it.”

“But what we can’t let happen, and what we will probably be more inclined to do moving forward is, having a flat tire and trying to get back to pit road is not an excuse to spin out.”

“So if we have to crack down a little bit harder on those things happening so that doesn’t become a trend, we will certainly react to that.”

Previous penalties

Bubba Wallace (2019) and Dale Earnhardt Jr (2004), have each admitted to bringing out a caution in the past. Admitting guilt caused a fine and points penalty to be handed out for each.

The most recent fine in the case of Bubba Wallace was $50,000 in 2019. Wallace spun twice during the race at Texas. On the second spin, he made contact with the inside wall, forcing NASCAR to throw the yellow.
