Bristol Dirt Race Results: March 29, 2021 (NASCAR Cup Series)

The Bristol Motor Speedway dirt track hosts the NASCAR Cup Series; The first dirt race since 1970 is in the books!

It’s been 50 years since the NASCAR Cup Series has raced on the dirt. Today, that comes to an end on the 19 degree banking of the Bristol Motor Speedway dirt track.

Kyle Larson and Denny Hamlin were scheduled to start from the front row. Following an engine change, Larson will head to the tail for the start. Denny Hamlin leads the field to the green…

Bristol Cup Race
Stage 1 – Report

Laps: 100 (1-100 / 250)

Green flag, Hamlin is sideways at the launch but he still wins the race into turn one.

Lap 2, Hamlin runs wide into turn three. Kyle Busch drives right by on the inside and Busch takes the lead.

Lap 9, Martin Truex Jr looks to the inside of Kyle Busch for the race lead. Truex Jr to the lead. Kyle Busch is overheating, he’s forced to pit under green.

Lap 30, Kyle Larson is flying though the field. He’s driving by them on the outside. After starting at the back, he’s running 12th.

Lap 41, Aric Almirola is around on the back stretch after clipping the inside durtle, that’s just ahead of the race leader! Shane Golobic, Corey LaJoie and Anthony Alfredo are collected. Truex Jr locks up the brakes and narrowly misses it. The red flag is out but all drivers are ok.

Green, Truex Jr leads as Bowman struggles to get it in gear. Christopher Bell takes over 2nd.

Competition caution

Lap 48, Ryan Newman misses the bottom and William Byron fills it. Newman closes the door but Byron is already there. Newman is around and the field scatters behind them. Harvick shoves Chase Briscoe into the outside wall. The caution is out and this will be the competition caution.

Green, Truex Jr is clear into turn one but Bell is all over his bumper off turn two.

Lap 53, Christopher Bell spins on the cushion from 2nd! Kyle Larson and Ross Chastain are collected. Heavy damage for all three.

Green, Truex Jr leads Daniel Suarez into turn one.

Lap 91, Byron beats on the rear bumper of Suarez in the battle for 2nd. He boxes him in behind a lap car, Byron to 2nd.

Martin Truex Jr wins stage one on the Bristol Dirt Track!

Stage 2 – Report

Laps: 100 (101-200 / 250)

Green flag on stage two, Truex Jr gets the jump in the outside as Suarez retakes 2nd. The entire field forms single file around the bottom in a hurry.

Lap 125, Suarez is closing the gap on Truex Jr. Laps later, he’s on his bumper and we have a battle for the lead.

Deeper in the field, Chris Buescher is beating on the rear bumper of Ryan Blaney in the battle for 8th. He’s gotta move them off the bottom.

Lap 135, Suarez is on the bumper of Truex Jr! He pushes him into the corner and Truex Jr is up the banking. Suarez drives by on the inside! Byron takes over 2nd.

Competition caution

Lap 150, the competition caution is out. Perfect timing for Chris Buescher who has a flat tire. Tear wear was expected to be an issue.

Green, Suarez and Byron run side by side into turn one. Suarez has the momentum on the outside off turn two and he leads off turn two.

Spin behind them, Blaney checks up and Kyle Busch runs into the back of him. Blaney is around and multiple cars are collected. The dust is making it hard for drivers to see. The caution is out.

Green, Suarez is clear into turn one. Logano swings around the outside of Byron to take 2nd.

Chase Briscoe spins off turn four with help from Kurt Busch and the caution is back out.

Single file restarts

Rule change: NASCAR has called for single file restarts.

Green, Suarez leads but Joey Logano looks inside into turn one. Suarez pushes up off the bottom, Logano fills the inside and doors him off the corner. They run side by side for the lead, Suarez holds him off and drops back to the bottom.

Lap 185, Cody Ware spins and the caution is out.

Green, Suarez leads Logano. Suarez floats off the bottom, Logano fills the inside lane. The rub doors and battle for the race lead. Logano clears him on the inside!

Joey Logano wins stage two at the Bristol Motor Speedway dirt track!

Stage 3 – Report

Laps: 50 (201-250 / 250)

They’ve dropped some water on the outside lane ahead of the 50-lap shootout.

Green flag on the final stage, Logano leads into turn one. Hamlin kicks it to the cushion in turn one and he drives right by Suarez to take 2nd.

48 to go, Hamlin knocks on the rear bumper of Logano but he can’t get by.

Hamlin runs the outside to build momentum. He crosses under Logano off the corner and looks to the inside but Logano holds him off.

Logano has moved to the cushion. Hamlin dives to the inside and they run side by side for the lead once again. Logano holds him off once again.

35 to go, Ricky Stenhouse Jr rubs fenders with Bubba Wallace. Wallace has a flat left rear. He spins, no caution.

30 to go, Logano leads Hamlin by near 1 second. The field is back to running single file on the bottom.

10 to go

10 to go, Denny Hamlin is exploring the high side of the track. He’s searching for speed.

6 to go, Hamlin gets too high and finds the slick. He rubs the wall as the car won’t turn up there. Martin Truex Jr takes 2nd away.

4 to go, Mike Marlar spins and collects the inside wall, the caution is out.

Green, Logano heads to the bottom in turn one as Hamlin heads for the top. Martin Truex Jr clips the wall behind them. Logano is gone off turn two.
