The Bristol Dirt Nationals opened a month long stint of dirt track racing at the famed Coliseum. The event ran from March 15-20th.

On the final night of the show, fans witnessed the on of the wildest things to ever happen on a race track. Super dirt late model driver Adam Yarbrough was getting pushed out of the pit area by a series official on a 4 wheeler.

The 4 wheeler then became attached to the race car. As the car fired up, it took off with the 4 wheeler attached. The official wisely jumped off.

As Yarbrough entered the banking in turn three, the 4 wheeler became dislodged from the machine. It was immediately sent into countless barrel rolls.

The fans erupted with excitement. Luckily, no one was injured as the official jumped off the 4 wheeler as soon as he noticed the ATV was stuck to the bumper of the race car.

That video has since gone viral.

Adam Yarbrough comments on the 4 wheeler incident

“That TikTok video has 300,000 views or something, it’s crazy,” Adam Yarbrough told RacingNews.co .

“You know, we stayed down there on the infield for 5-6 hours before we can come back out. So, something happened to my starter, which is pretty common with these cars. It wouldn’t start and I had to get pushed off.”

“We were running such a low gear there, like a 512. Around the house here, I’m closer to a 600. The transmission is like a direct drive. You can pull it back, almost like a sprint car. And when it gets going so fast, it’ll crank up.”

“He pushed me off pit road, I pulled it back in gear and the engine started to crank. I gave it a little bit of gas and kept it going. Gave it a little throttle to keep it going because it’s still clanking back and forth.”

“I got all the way down the backstretch. Going into turn three, they came over the raceceiver and said, ‘#67 stop!’ And, I just slowed down and stopped. I didn’t know really why. They didn’t know told me to stop because you know, I just got going.”

“So, I sat there and they red flagged the field. They said, ‘Everybody just stop. Hold tight for a second.’ So, I sat there for what felt like 20 minutes. When we got going, I roll down the frontstretch and then the backstretch again, and I see this four-wheeler hangin on a wrecker.”

“I said, ‘That son-of-a-bitch was hooked to me.’ Cause it was tore all to hell.”

Are you saying that because of the lower gear that you had to be pushed faster than usual to get it started?

“Well, yeah. That and my starter wouldn’t engage. When I get pushed off, it’s like it’s just clanging until I get pushed to certain speed, which is like 60-70 mph.”

How did it get hooked?

“I don’t even know. I didn’t ask. They just said it got hooked to my back bumper.”

Yarbrough talked with the official who was driving the 4 wheeler

After the incident, Yarbrough went to find CJ the official.

“I wanted to make sure he was ok. Because I know he was riding it.”

“After the heat race, I walked over CJ and said, ‘Hey man, did that four wheeler get hooked to me.’ “

“He said, ‘Yeah man. When I saw it got hooked to your car, I bailed off. I just let it go’ “

“They said, ‘It probably flipped 40 times.’ I said, ‘No.’ Then, I walked over and looked that the handlebars, it looked like you tied them, like your shoe laces. It just mangled everything.”

“It kinda sucks because it overshadowed my weekend. I’m a small fish in a big pond because it’s just me, my mom and my dad at the race track. I really run good and nobody seen me run good. They just seen that four-wheeler flipped off the back of my damn car.”

“I went to Gaffney after that and I had 10 people looking for t-shirts. And I don’t have no t-shirts.”

Kelley Carlton’s totaled 4 wheeler

“I talked to Kelley Carlton, it was his four-wheeler. I race with the Ulimate Super Late Model Series [which Carlton runs]. They asked him to be the race director at Bristol. He brought his crew for lineups, tech and everything. These are people that I deal with on a weekly basis.”

“So, I knew all them boys, good. I called Kelly after the fact, ‘I said, hey man. I didn’t know that four-wheeler was hooked to me.” He added, “I mean, I couldn’t tell anything was hooked to the back of my car. If there’s anything I can help with repairing it.’ He said, ‘No, don’t worry about it. I know it’s not your fault.’ “

Is it repairable? It didn’t look like it?

“Yeah, it don’t look good. I didn’t really get into it with him and he didn’t say nothing else about it.”

“At Gaffney, I’d be riding though the pits on a four-wheeler and I had a 100 people say, ‘Hey! Better watch that four-wheeler.’ But, everybody seen it.”

On Friday, Yarbrough qualified 9th in his group. He drove it to a transfer spot in his heat race then finished 8th in the main event.

In Saturday’s finale , Yarbrough qualified 5th in his group. In the feature, he started in the top 10 and dropped to 13th. As he wasn’t going forward, he decided to pull off before the checkered, finishing 17th.

“I had a really good weekend, you know, I made both shows. I didn’t run no B-Mains,” the 36-year-old driver stated.

Leading into that race, I know a lot of people in the industry were warning the teams not to bring their light parts. To bring more heavy duty components, did you run into issues?

“Oh yeah, I did all that. You had to stiffen all your stuff up. Really stiff springs, you had to stiffen up your right front lower control arm. You had to just make sure everything was good. You had to stiffen everything up because you’re going so fast.”

“I asked Chris Madden, because I race with him a lot. I said, ‘Is Eldora or Knoxville faster than this?’ He said, ‘Shit no! You’re going the fastest you’ll ever go, on a dirt track.’ “

Was it the fastest you’ve ever gone?

“Oh my god, it was unbelievable. I mean, you could take the seatbelts off and throw them away because you wasn’t moving with all the g-forces. Something I’ve never felt before. Something I may never get to feel again.”

Coming back in 2022?

Well, I would assume they’re going to do it next year.

“They’re doing the Outlaw show too which is invite only. I didn’t get invited. I’ll be brutally honest with you, they want people like Stewart Friesen. I mean, he ain’t even run 10 super late model races and they invited him.”

The World of Outlaws will roll into the track on April 8-10.

“They want the people like Kyle Larson, all them kinda people. They don’t really give a damn about me. I mean, who the hell am I. So, I didn’t get invited. There’s forty people, they damn sure ain’t going to invite someone small like me. But, I wish they would have because it was kinda cool with just me, my mom and my dad going.”

“I run 8th on the first night. On Saturday, I didn’t tighten up my car enough. But, I still made a good showing for a 36 year old with just his mom and his daddy there.”

You live kinda close to Bristol. Have you been to Bristol before, as a fan?

“I’ve never been to Bristol. I’m not a asphalt fan, at all. I don’t even watch NASCAR. I couldn’t tell you the last time I watched a NASCAR race but I live 10 minutes from Mooresville, North Carolina.”

Other than the incident, you had a good time?

“I had a great time. It was neat to make the show and just be there. Being in the infield in Bristol, I guess they’re doing it again. But, before I went, who knew they were going to be doing it again. I wanted to make sure we did it. I’d love to go back.”
