On Thursday, NETFLIX announced they are working with NASCAR driver Bubba Wallace to film a new documentary series for the online streaming platform. The series will follow and document the driver on his journey through the 2021 racing season.
Wallace currently drives for 23XI Racing in the NASCAR Cup Series. The new team is co-owned by Michael Jordan and fellow NASCAR driver Denny Hamlin.
“You know me…I like to keep things real and raw. Pumped to have netflix capture these moments to share with you guys,” Bubba Wallace stated via twitter.
During the 2020 season, Wallace, the only Black driver, was vocal on inclusion and equality within racing. He was the first driver to take a stand against the Confederate flag. After calling for a ban of the flag during a CNN interview, NASCAR stepped up to outright ban the flag at all events and properties.
In the weeks that followed, his former team mistook a garage pull for a noose. The combination of the last two things quickly made Wallace one of the most hated/loved drivers on the track.
The title of the new series has yet to be announced.
Production: 300 Studios and Boardwalk Pictures are the production studios working on the series.
Director: It’s directed by Erik Parker, who previously worked on “L.A. Burning: The Riots 25 Years Later.”
Executive Producers: Kevin Liles, Nolan Baynes, and Kelly G. Griffin for 300 Studios; Andrew Fried, Dane Lillegard, Jordan Wynn, and Sarina Roma for Boardwalk Pictures; Matt Summers, Tim Clark, and Tally Hair for NASCAR. Rob Ford serves as Co-Executive Producer.
Earlier this year, ‘The Crew’ was released on NETFLIX. It’s a comedy series starring Kevin James. In it’s first season, the show featured Ryan Blaney, Austin Dillon and Cole Custer. NASCAR worked with them directly.
The release date of the Bubba Wallace documentary will be announced at a later time.
