Today, Indy 500 qualifying begins. Four fast laps around the Indianapolis Motor Speedway will be averaged to set an Indianapolis 500 qualifying time.

This is a 6 hour qualifying session. Drivers can make multiple attempts to set a fast group of 4 laps
The top 9 cars will advance into Fast 9 qualifying. That run for pole will take place tomorrow. Everyone outside of the top 9, their starting position will be set.
The top 30 will automatically race in the Indy 500. Five cars outside the top 30 will battle for the final three spots in tomorrow’s qualifying run.
This session locks in positions 10-30. It also selects who will run for the pole tomorrow.

Qualifying Report
4 hours remaining, Scott Dixon leads so far as every car has taken to the track at least once.
3 hours remaining, many are attempting to improve their lap times. However, as the track heats up, it appears near impossible.
2 hours remaining, Alex Palou went for a wild ride in the closing minutes of qualifying while attempting to improve his time.. He lost the rear end off the corner, slid up the banking and slammed the wall. He tore the entire right side off his machine but the driver is ok.
1 hour remains, no teams sit in the staging area. However, they are all along the pit wall, waiting to jump in the wait list. It’s unlikely anyone will improve their times as the track temp is much higher than it was hours ago.
40 minutes remain, Ed Jones hits the track. He improves his time and jumps to 11th! Now, we’ll see a flood of drivers hit the track.
14 minutes remaining, Will Power attempts another run but he can’t improve. Power is 31st and will be fighting tomorrow for placement on the last row!
Scott Dixon is quickest overall at the conclusion of Saturday qualifying for the Indianapolis 500!
