Indianapolis Race Results: August 14, 2021 (Indycar Series)

Race Report

Green flag, the top three form single file before the flagstand. Power ducks out of line and looks to the outside into turn one, O’Ward leads out of turn one.

Max McLaughlin is airborne over the curbs behind them. He keeps rolling and passes Jimmie Johnson in the process.

Point leader Alex Palou has a power issue. He’s changed the fuel map to fix the issue.

Lap 5, O’Ward leads Power by 2.2 seconds.

Lap 10, RC Enernson slows, no caution. Moments later, Scott Dixon hits the pit lane and many others follow.

Lap 12, Max Chilton dives to the inside of Newgarden in turn one. Chilton runs wide and forces Newgarden off the track. They both run through the grass but keep it rolling.

Lap 17, O’Ward pits from the race lead. He makes the switch from the softer red tire to the header black. Power pitted laps prior and he’s cycled just ahead of O’Ward.

Pit

Lap 21, Power cycles to the race lead.

Lap 22, Herta has a run on O’Ward down the front stretch. He dives to the inside with the softer red tires. Clear, Herta to 2nd.

Lap 32, Power leads Herta by 5.2 seconds. Behind them, three cars run nose to tail for 5th as Harvey is all over the bumper of Rossi.

Lap 35, Dixon returns to the pit lane. He found that he had zero grip at the end of a 25 lap run on red tires.

Pit

Lap 38, Power pits from the lead. He goes from reds to reds. A lap later, Herta to the pit lane.

Lap 45, Power cycles back to the race lead. Herta now trails by 9 seconds.

Lap 55, Will Power is struggling to lap James Hinchcliffe. The leader is in dirty air and Herta has closed to 5 seconds.

“This guy’s fucking me man. He’s pushing me back to Herta,” Will Power radio.

Pit

Lap 62, Power pits from the race lead. Hinchcliffe pits with him and beats Power to the pit exit. The lap car remains an issue. Herta pits a few laps later.

Lap 66, Power leads Herta by just 3 seconds.

Lap 68, Laex Palou is up in smoke! Trouble for the championship leader as he comes to a stop on the track. The caution is out!

Green flag, Power leads into turn one. Grosjean dives to the inside of Herta into turn one. Grosjean locks up and still completes the pass for 2nd. The no. 51 of Grosjean has slightly fresher tires.

12 to go, Sebastien Bourdais and Ryan Hunter-Reay bang wheels and the both run off in the grass. No caution as they keep rolling.

9 to go

9 to go, Rinus Veekay has stalled on the track after Max McLaughlin drove into the back of him and the caution is out.

Green, Power leads Grosjean by a car length into turn one.

Penalty: Max McLaughlin has been handed a penalty for contact with VeeKay.

4 to go, Grosjean and Herta are both out of push to pass.

2 to go, Power leads Grosjean by 1.1 seconds.
