NASCAR Cup Series champion Kyle Busch is making his Tulsa Shootout debut. He’s running four classes this week.

In his first heat race, he stole the show. In the 600cc Outlaw Non-Winged Micro division, Busch started 8th following a random draw. He then drove through the field, knocking the cushion along the way.

He took the lead coming to the white flag. With a gap heading into turn three for the final time, Busch drove it in too deep. He lost the lead at the center of the corner. Busch fought back on the outside and they raced side-by-side to the finish line. The 36-year-old grabbed the heat win by just a few feet.

Busch also finished 3rd in his 600cc Outlaw Winged Micro division heat race. However, in the 600cc Winged Micros division, Busch finished 7th of 10 cars.

Busch tweeted shortly after, “Had to happen soon enough. Just got my ass kicked.”

Kyle Busch comments

“It was fun,” Kyle Busch told FloRacing after his first win.

“I really appreciate Christopher Bell, Joe B. Miller and all the guys. It’s really fun. Just different, different atmosphere, different class of car.”

“Just wheeling it, trying to get the most I could. I watched my son yesterday, he gave me all the tricks, passed them on the high-side. So, we took it to them right there. That was fun.”

“Amazing how many car they can stuff in such a small place. Other than that, a lot of talent here. A lot of big names, in this world anyway. It’s fun to just go participate, race against guys from different backgrounds.”

“I don’t really have a dirt background. But, I did race dwarf car once back in the heydays.”

Kyle Busch is sitting 3rd on the points sheet in the 600cc Outlaw Non-Winged Micro division following a massive amount of passing points earned. That will set him up for a great starting position as the show continues.

“That’s the name of the game right now, just trying to get those points. I was hoping to get 3-4 of them. But, to be able to get to the lead and race up front there was pretty awesome.”

“It was close. I about backed it up too far getting into turn three there on the last lap. I even told myself down the backstretch, ‘Alright, don’t fuck this up, make sure you do it right.’ Long behold, I almost did it.”

He concluded, “At least another Kyle is able to come out here and do good too.”

Busch was referring to fellow NASCAR driver Kyle Larson. Larson isn’t running the Tulsa Shootout but he’s on the entry list for the Chili Bowl Nationals.
