Gordon didn’t win a race in his debut season. However, he picked up three runner-up finishes. Yet, he didn’t go without a trophy as he claimed the 1991 NASCAR Busch Series rookie of the year award.

He then returned to the Busch Series in 1992, claiming three race wins. The next year, the legend was born as he moved up to the big leagues.

By 1993, Gordon was signed to drive for Hendrick Motorsports. Where he won the NASCAR Cup Series rookie of the year award.

But that was only the beginning. Soon, Jeff Gordon became a household name as he battled Dale Earnhardt for series championships and race wins, year after year.

Gordon spent his entire Cup career in Chevrolet powered race cars. However, during his brief Busch Series career, he was driving a Ford machine.

Yesterday, a 1991 Ford Thunderbird went to auction. In the description, the car claims to have been given to Gordon, by Ford, in thanks for winning the 2001 NASCAR Busch Series rookie of the year award.

As of Friday, the high bid on the car sits at $5,600.

The listing reads, “This car was reportedly originally owned by Jeff Gordon. It was a gift from Ford for his achievement of becoming the NASCAR Busch Series Rookie of the Year for 1991.”

The glove box of the car is signed by Jeff Gordon. The NASCAR champion is picked holding the door to the glove box which he signed.

58,000 miles have been driven on the 3.8L Supercharged V6. It’s a 5-speed manual transmission. The car currently sits in Wilmette, IL.

Gordon claimed 93 race wins and four series titles before his retirement in 2016.

The typical value of a 1991 Ford Thunderbird sits between $1,000-$3,000. That places the bids on this car well above KBB value.

6 days remain in the online auction. Currently, 8 different bidders have engaged in the auction.
