Biggest crash in the history of Auto Club Speedway (Video)

They’re setting records in the final race on the 2-mile oval

Today, Auto Club Speedway is hosting a double-header featuring the NASCAR Cup Series and NASCAR Xfinity Series. The NASCAR Cup Series drivers are up first after rain adjusted the weekend schedule.

This is the last race on the current 2-mile oval configuration. A portion of the land has already been sold as the track is set to be transformed into a half-mile short track.

A restart in stage two, caused chaos. Race leader Joey Logano stalled his launch in the restart box. Behind him, Ross Chastain and Noah Gragson both attempted to restart the race with a slight run on Logano.

When Logano didn’t launch as they expected, Chastain was forced to checkup. They caused multiple cars on the outside row to play bumper cars.

Deeper in the field, the accordion grew larger. Many cars stacked up on top of each other. Including Aric Almirola who drove over the left front of Christopher Bell.

10 cars were involved in the accident. That makes it the largest NASCAR Cup Series crash at Auto Club Speedway since it’s debut in 1997.

Involved in Crash: Christopher Bell, Tyler Reddick, Aric Almirola, Ryan Preece, Ryan Blaney, Brad Keselowski, Justin Haley, Todd Gilliland, Chase Briscoe and Cody Ware.

NASCAR drivers comment after the crash

“Everybody just stopped. I don’t know if the leaders were playing games, checking up or what. It caused a huge a wreck,” Aric Almirola told Fox Sports after exiting the care center.

“Unfortunate end to my Cup racing career on the 2-mile track,” Tyler Reddick stated.

The race is currently ongoing.
