NASCAR penalties shake up point standings

NASCAR point standings updated following multiple 100-point penalties after Phoenix Raceway

On Friday, before teams touched the track at Phoenix Raceway, NASCAR discovered something they didn’t like on the hood louvers for all four Hendrick Motorsports machines as well as the No. 31 Kaulig Racing machine.

The series elected to allow the teams to practice with the parts. Directly after practice, the parts were confiscated and taken back to the NASCAR R&D Center in North Carolina for evaluation.

On Wednesday, NASCAR issued a huge penalty to all five times. Each have been docked 100 owner points. Additionally, all five crew chiefs are suspended for the next four races.

NASCAR issues $550,000 in fines after Phoenix Raceway

The No. 5 driven by Kyle Larson, No 24 driven by William Byron, No. 48 driven by Alex Bowman and the No. 31 driven by Justin Haley have all been docked 100 driver points and 10 playoff points.

Each violation also came with a $100,000 fine. Meaning, Hendrick Motorsports received $400,000 in total fines.

The points penalties have shaken up the standings. Alex Bowman was the points leader exiting Phoenix Raceway but he now sits 23rd in the standings.

Kevin Harvick, in his final full-time season has been handed the points lead after the fourth race of the season.

Hendrick Motorsports has announced their plans to appeal the penalty.
