9-year-old racer has passed following Interlagos Circuit crash

SuperBike issues a statement following the passing of Lorenzo Somaschini

On Friday, 9-year-old racer Lorenzo Somaschini suffered a crash during a practice session at the Interlagos Circuit in Sao Paulo, Brazil. The medical crew at the track attended to him via the ICU ambulance.

He first went to the hospital at the track. The racer was then transported to Hospital Geral da Pedreira where he remained until Saturday.

He was then transported to the intensive care unit at Albert Einstein Hospital, in São Paulo. On Monday, he passed from injuries.

The rider was from Argentine, born in Rosário. He was competing in the Junior Honda Cup division which features racers between the ages of 8 and 16.

The event was being run by SuperBike.

SuperBike Brasil Statement

Superbike issued the following statement:

“The SuperBike Brasil organization has been providing full assistance to the rider’s family since Friday (14/6), when the Argentinian had a fall during the first free practice session of the Jr Cup, valid for the 4th stage of SuperBike Brasil, at the Interlagos Autódromo.”

“Everyone on the SuperBike Brazil team is appalled by this event and expresses our sincere sorrow to all of Lorenzo’s family and friends.”

Jorge Lorenzo comments

Somaschini used the No. 99. That was a tribute to MotoGP world champion Jorge Lorenzo.

Lorenzo stated, “My heart breaks because I was his idol and he had my number. Unfortunately, motorcycles can give us everything, at any time. A very big hug to the family.”
