The accusation involves a Joe Gibbs Racing engineer
An engineer at the NASCAR Cup Series level is being accused of sharing team information. The story broke today via the AP.
The engineer in question currently works for Joe Gibbs Racing. However, it’s reported that he is currently in a contract year with the team.
The engineer accused of selling the JGR info has apparently been exploring options with other teams.
It’s not uncommon for teams to share information. However, in those cases the two teams typically have a paid alliance setup.

Joe Gibbs Racing currently has two cars in the NASCAR Cup Series playoff battle. The crew member that supposedly purchased the information works for a team with no cars in the playoffs.
Teams without cars in the playoffs: JTG Daugherty Racing; Kaulig Racing; Richard Childress Racing; Spire Motorsports; Trackhouse Racing; Front Row Motorsports; RFK Racing; Rick Ware Racing; Stewart-Haas Racing; Wood Brothers Racing; Legacy Motor Club
Note: There’s only one Toyota team without a car in the playoffs.
NASCAR told the AP that they were aware of the rumor of one team with no cars in the playoffs paying cash for setup information.
NASCAR will not be involved until a lawsuit is opened or a complaint is filed.
Last month, a similar situation took place in the Indycar Series. The Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing headquarters was subject to a search by the FBI after a tip that information had been stolen by a former employee.
