NASCAR comments on changes to Xfinity and Trucks

NASCAR President Steve Phelps comments on future changes to the lower divisions

The NASCAR Next Gen car made it’s debut in the 2022 season. As a result, the spec chassis is identical from team to team across the NASCAR Cup Series.

The car has been tweaked several times since it’s launch. Yet, since it’s introduction, we’ve heard no word of doing something similar in other NASCAR divisions.

The NASCAR Xfinity Series features cars with similar horsepower to Cup cars but with much smaller tires. Teams are still building their own cars in the division.

The president also indicated that new manufacturers are looking at joining NASCAR.

Steve Phelps comments on future Xfinity and Truck changes

“I think we’ll continue to fine-tune what that car is,” Phelps stated via Race Industry Week.

“And it’s an industry-wide thing. It’s not just, ‘Hey NASCAR’s going to do this, this, and this.’ It really is working with our [manufacturer] partners, working with Goodyear, working with our race teams. And we’re in constant collaboration with those groups, with those stakeholder groups.”

“You know, I think there’s some other opportunities for us in the lower series to make some changes. What those look like, I don’t know, but we’ll keep iterating on the NextGen car.”

“I think we’re looking at some things in the Xfinity Series, nothing to announce now. I think there’s some things we need to do with our race teams in the Xfinity Series as well as [manufactures] that are existing and potential new OEs that could be in that series and in our Truck Series.”

NASCAR has already developed an EV prototype. However, what they plan to do with that, if anything, remains unknown.
