St. Petersburg results from the chaotic Indycar street race

Today, the 2023 Indycar Series season opens in St. Petersburg, Florida. The 14-turn, 1.8-mile street circuit brings 27 open wheel machines to the starting grid, the largest field in the history of the event.

Race Report

Green flag, Grosjean gets the jump and he’s clear before turn one.

Felix Rosenqvist tags the wall into turn three after fighting for space with Scott Dixon! Rosenqvist bounces across the track and stops traffic. Simon Pagenaud, Santino Ferrucci, Helio Castroneves, Devlin DeFrancesco and Sting Ray Robb are collected. Devlin DeFrancesco comes to a stop and he gets t-boned by Benjamin Pedersen and launched with all four wheels off the ground. 5 cars are manged in turn three and the red flag is out.

Green, Grosjean leads Colton Herta on the single file restart. Armstrong has a flat tire after David Malukas gets into the back of him and he rolls slowly back to the pit lane.

Penalty: David Malukas will serve a pass-through penalty for avoidable contact.

Lap 25, Pato O’Ward has a run on Colton Herta into turn 10. O’Ward dives inside and takes 2nd away. Herta is struggling on the softer tires and falling quickly through the field.

Lap 32

Lap 32, Romain Grosjean pits from the lead as green flag stops are underway. The teams on the softer tires are in first. Scott Mclaughlin, the first driver who started on the harder primary tire, takes the lead for now.

Lap 36, McLaughlin heads for the pit lane. He exits with Grosjean all over him. Grosjean works alongside but McLaughlin holds him off as Grosjean gets into the marbles.

Lap 37, full course caution as Conor Daly is spun backwards in turn 9 with help from Kyle Kirkwood.

Green, McLaughlin leads Grosjean into turn one.

Lap 42 Crash

Lap 42, Rinus VeeKay is in the tire barrier. Jack Harvey gets into the back of VeeKay as the track is blocked. Kyle Kirkwood comes into the scene with nowhere to go, driving into the back of Harvey. Kirkwood is launched into the air and over both machines! Kirkwood lands back on his wheels. The caution is back out.

Kirkwood heads for the pit lane. The crew makes quick repairs after the car was 5 feet in the air and sends him back out.

Green, McLaughlin leads Grosjean. Colton Herta is pushed wide by Will Power into the marbles and he’s in the tire barrier in turn 8. The caution is out once more.

Green, McLaughlin leads Grosjean and O’Ward into turn one.

Lap 63, Grosjean is all over the bumper of McLaughlin in the battle for the lead.

Leaders Crash

Lap 70, Grosjean pits from 2nd for his final stop, primary tires for him. A lap later, McLaughlin to the pit lane, alternate soft tires for him.

They exit the pits side by side, Mclaughlin noses ahead as Grosjean is on cold tires! Grosjean works to his outside into turn four as McLaughlin blocks the inside, they bang wheels and both cars slam the tire barriers! Both cars are stuck in the barrier, another caution is out!

Green with just 21 laps to go, Pato O’Ward is handed the lead with Marcus Ericsson in 2nd.

6 to go, Josef Newgarden is on fire while running 9th. He heads for the pit lane under green.

5 to go, O’Ward leads Ericsson by just 0.4 seconds.

4 to go, O’Ward has an issue off the final corner! He either spun the tires or missed a shift. Marcus Ericsson drives right by to take the lead!
